is it really hard to swap a auto tranny with a 5 speed?

in short, yes, its really hard, you need hundreds of little parts and at least 20-30 hrs if you've never done it before.

for example, here is a trans swap how to for a saturn. of course all cars are different, but it will give you a base point.

lets put it this way. its easyer to swap in a new motor that already has a manual tranny than to just swap a tranny.

to swap in a manual you need....

-clutch pedal install
-new ECU in some cases
-Manual Flywheel
-clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate, and a way to run clutch cables (its even harder if you have a hydrolicly controlled clutch)
-new drive shaft (sometimes)
-gear shifter. its easyer if your auto tranny had the shifter in the center concil.
-a new stearing colum, unless you want an unused gear selector.
-shifter linkage
-new tranny mounts and custom crossmember (somtimes)

there are also other odds and ends. each manufacture will be differenct and each modle will be different and its especially hard if you have to swap out tranny housings so it will bolt up to the engine block. some manufactures dont even make manuals for some engine blocks.

In addition to this list, many engines for auto trans cars do NOT have a clutch pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft, yet the standard trans engines will have one. The clutch cannot work without this bearing, and the only way to install one is to pull the crankshaft out of the engine and haveachine shop drill and install one, or replace the crankshaft.
Almost always its much cheaper and easier to sell the auto trans car and buy a stick car.
