Just some feedback if it's worthwhile doing any performance mods to this engine. If so whats available? I wouls have liked to have gotten a GTP so it would have had the SC 3.8 but I needed a car right away and an '01 SE was what was available. Still, I can't leave well enough alone.

It's nice to know that there is a company out there that produces performance parts for this engine and thaks for the info but I guess maybe what I was really asking for was if this engine was worth adding performance mods to. I don't want to go and add a cold induction system, cat back exhaust etc. just find out that this engine only gave negligable hp/torque gains. I just figured that anyone out there with experience or knowledge of this powerplant could give a thumbs up or thumbs down on mods. Believe me I could wait till down the road when I can afford a GTP SC and work with the 3.8.

truthfully, I wouldn't bother. Dollar for dollar, you'll be a lot happier saving your money to bolt-on performance parts to the 3800SC when you can afford that.

So lets say i want to swap a 3100 for 3.8L 3800 Series II or III Supercharged
what are other things that need to be replaced is it big of a deal ?
couse i was thinking about that SC for 3.1 but now i think it would be just better to put 3.8

and its about the same price difference ($4000) between 3.8 SC engine and a SC for 3.1

http://paceparts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8645
also do you know other sites that i can buy 3.8 sc from ?
thx

If I had a Grand Prix SE with a 3.1 litre I'd probably want to try to make it faster too. I'd probably do a CAI and add dual exhaust, but I think that's about all you can do to the engine....short of a CSC or turbo kit. You could probably do some suspension mods to make the car hadle better. It may not help your quarter mile time but make the car faster overall.

The biggest problem you're going to run into is the lack of availability of aftermarket performance parts. The fact is that the 3800 is used in so many different GM cars.....Grand Prix, Camaro, Firebird, Monte Carlo, Regal, Bonneville, Impala, Intrigue, etc.......there is a decent market for performance parts. I say "decent" because the 3800 aftermarket is nothing compared to.....say, for instance, the small block Chevy.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 3800 was voted one of the 10 best engines of the 20th Century by Ward's Auto World. These engines mod well because they can take the abuse. I'm not sure how well the 3100 would fare if heavily modded. It's just not made for that. The 3100 is a standard fare, no frills, work horse engine.

I'm not downing GP SE's. I drove one for a week as a rental. It was a nice car with decent performance. But if your looking to smoke some tires and outrun some sports cars, I think you'll end up frustrated.
