auto trans. problems....again

1993 3.3 3spd auto-trans; 118,400miles.

Last week, after it's 2nd/last shift, it seemed as if the car didn't want to go. I'd apply more gas, and it would still remain around 35-40mph.. eventually, as i applied alot, it would "kick in".. but even then it wasn't normal...

The best i could describe this... is when your driving a manual, if you left it in 2nd gear (for example) and tried to go without shifting.. despite the RPMs being high and the loud noise, when you would let off the gas, the car will pull back. thats basically what this feels like.

well, after about 5 minutes. This went away.

Again, today, it did the same exact thing. a couple minutes later, went away.

Well tonight i drove about 60+ miles, parked the car [WAS fine]. It sat about 6 hours, and then i got in to drive back home another 60+.

It was doing the same thing, but i thought it went away because i didn't feel any difference after a while. After i got off the turnpike, within a couple miles, it started shifting slowly/slipping (maybe). Then a few miles later, the rpms were going higher, but eventually it shifted. The car was parked for about 5 minutes, and when started.. it shifted better (without the RPMs going high) but it still had some delay in shifting and a loss of power.

the fluid is not low, however, it looks like its over the "full" line about an inch or so.

[edit] the tcc is unplugged.

when i had the car running to make sure the fluid was okay, there was a 'crackeling' sound (the best way i could describe it) coming from the area of the transmission... ?

If anyone has any idea, it'd definitely be appreciated. I'll probably get a filter/fluid change this weekend, but i'd rather not spend the money if it (some how) doesn't have to do with the trans...

THANKS ALOT.

Did the tranny fluid smelt like it was burnt? You could be facing tranny problems, On the other hand it could also be the TCC cuz i've heard unplugging it only last so long before you will have problems again, If this is true or not I don't know. Also Check your Cat Conv. that could be clogging up causing this intermitant shifting issue. When was the last time you had the fluid/filter changed?

Im not sure if it smelled burnt... I know i smell it to see.. but i can never tell.. or i just try to convince myself it isn't, i don't know.

The last time i had the fluid changed was when i had THIS transmission put in... about 12,500 ago ((this trans. has about 86,000 on it now)).

Its at the mechanic today, so i guess i'll see what goes on

thanks though.

yeah, trans is gone.
they had it in the garage and changed the fluid/filter, and then it wouldn't go into Reverse. The mechanic is a good friend, and he said nothing he did could have caused this. They pushed it out of the garage, drove it for a little.. then tried it and still nothing. So they took the pan and everything off, drained the fluid to see if they could see anything, and still nothing. So, it must have just been a warning sign, i don't know. But this is the second transmission... bought it w/ 94,500, trans. out at 106, and now from then until 118. Both times the car ran excellent, and just went. I don't understand it.. but oh well, just figured i'd update. Thanks
