Burning Smell

Hello all,

I own a 99 intrigue (53,000 miles) that I love except for a couple problems. First, I'am have the hard shifting problem that everyone else has. My remedy is just to drive real smooth and it rarely shifts hard. It does really bug me that "in my mind" I'am always thinking that the tranny might go at anytime and I would have to shell out big bucks to fix it.

My other problem is a burning smell that I get after driving. Most noticetable after exiting the vehicle. It seems to be coming from the front of the car, but If i lift the hood I can't smell it. I can't seem to pin point where this smell is coming from. I've looked for leaks, plastic stuck to the under carriage of the car. Any idea's of what this could be???

I remember having a similar problem with my intrigue. Are you seeing any coolant disappear?

This happened to my parents Santa Fe this past spring. We couldn't find anything and neither could the dealer. But ever since the dealer looked at it, we haven't smelt it. My guess was that it could have been a belt rubbing on something. But since the dealer dummied up and said, "oh we couldn't find anything," we never found out what happened.

I have not noticed my coolent level going down. I've been watching it for the past week and it seems stable. How about the brakes?? Could brakes produce a smell?

see if that smell is coming from your transmission from burning transmission fluid. You may want to get that transmission looked at and look at all the tranny posts on this forum. There is a solenoid or valve that sometimes goes bad on the tranny also. It's not that expensive to replace either--tranny stays on car. $80 valve + labor.
