Its about time someone defined proper texting etiquette for the rest of the world. Why? Alright, so I texted this girl I know, asking what band was playing the friday night show she's going to call me about later in the week. Hmm... she never answered!!! Now, this could be for several reasons, but I think its about time that there is a standard by which all SMS messaging can be measured. Add rule suggestions as you wish! GO!

same rules apply for texting as for any other method of communication.Treat it as you would a face-to-face conversation.

for chrissake... fucking call the person... isn't that what a damn phone is for?
My ex used to send text messages to my phone (via the internet) when she knows damn well I don't have the ability to respond via text message (because I think it's retarded, and I refuse to pay for the service). Then, she'd get pissed because I didn't acknowledge her text message (presumably by calling her)... WTF?! if anyones got something to say to or ask me, then they should just call me. What a waste of time.

can't exactly call during the middle of class.... that is what text is for. Talking to someone when calling isn't an option. Thanks for crapping on my thread though.

peferably one thats pecx capable, has vibro poo alert.
texting is a useful way of transmitting simple information.
i.e. "Im home now, come over"
"The movie starts at 6pm"
"My address is xxxxxxx....."
The sort of thing that you would get over and done with in a 30second phone conversation.
But if you want to have a conversation then ring the person.
Here in NZ its 20c a message, and that adds up really fast if your having a text conversation. I can say more in a minute than I can in a minutes worth of text messages (about $1).

Unless your on telecom the god of all cellphone networks where its 500 texts a month for $10 or Boost Mobile is 1000 texts to people on the same network for $10.
I think it's retarded how people will start fights through text messaging when they're too damn pansyish (ITS A WORD) to argue face to face. GROW SOME BALLS.

You'll get over it.
As for texting, i feel the same way about it as i do talking on the phone or on the net, it's retarded and if i could, i would rather have a face to face conversation...besides the price of texting is outrageous these days.

I use my mobile phone almost exclusively for text messages.
1. I HATE phones. I hate it when they ring, I hate not being able to see who I'm hearing, etc. If I want to have a conversation with someone, I go to their house and have a snack and a chat. If the person is too far away, I get on the internet and IM.
2. Text messaging saves paper and makes my life easier. Most of the times that I'd have someone call me is for them to provide me with some information, and usually I'll end up having to scrounge for a pen and paper to write that down with. This way it's just stored on my phone.
3. It's discreet and private. People around can't really eavesdrop on your conversation (if for some reason they wanted to), and you can text message in the middle of a school class, from your work cubicle, wherever, in silence.
With the money I save from not chatting on my mobile, the total price of all my texting still comes to less than the price of most people's bills (people I've talked to about it anyways).
:1: for texting.
As for etiquette, treat it as a regular conversation. Spell words out properly and maintain the best grammar possible. The only major grammatical error I ignore with texting is capitalization, since with most phones it requires a sometimes lengthy button pressing process just to get one capital letter.

Common courtesy. Reply when addressed. Doesn't have to be the same format, but at least acknowledge.

Ive had long text conversations with people. Usually when they cant talk on the phone. I think its a great service, and I had to have my monthly limit increased to 1300 per month because I used so many.

Also, the only people I text are people I went to college with, who are all long-distance from me, so texting is cheaper than a long-distance call to them ;)

I like texting only when i'm at work or something, or i'm walking into a building where i might not get signal. Things like that when you only have to say "yes" ," no " or something short.
oh, and i have a slight phobia of the phone. For some reason i HATE answering the phone. So i either ignore the person then call them back, or i text them and ask what they called for

So much of good quality communication is to do with body language and tone/inflection of speech, mediums like email and especially text messages fall VERY short.

Agreed, but that's what smilies are for :D:grinyes::rofl:
Another good reason to go up to the person and talk face to face though.
