throwout bearing question

can someone explain how you can fuck up the throwout bearing...I mean from what ive read it says that.... "If you allow the vehicle to idle in gear with the clutch pedal depressed, instead of shifting to neutral gear, you can wear out the throwout bearing." what does this mean? how will it sound when driving? Because when im at the light sometimes i just leave my foot all the way on the clutch and i have it in first gear. So this means i dont put it in neutral and i dont leave my foot on the clutch. the only TOB problem i've had is when it shattered into 8 different pieces...wasn't my fault, it was the fucker who "borrowed" my car for 3 weeks....got my car back, pushed the clutch in and the pedal vibrated the hell out of my foot...yeah he fucked my 2nd gear synchro up too :( took it to my mech (cause it was still under warranty from previous work), took the tranny out and he said the TOB was shattered into 8 pieces, and my clutch and flywheel were purple... so let this be a lesson to everyone...don't lend your car out to anyone lol

Holding your foot on the clutch will put pressure on the TOB, so yes it will cause more wear. Will you ever notice any ill effects from it? Probably not. TOBs should last a long time. But you are putting unecessary stress on the thrust bearing, especially with heavy clutches. I dont see the point in risking it when all you have to do is toss it in nuetral.

okay so at a stop light instead of holding it in 1st gear and presing the clutch...just put the car in neutral? I mean i rarely ever hold it in gear at a light, but sometimes i still do it.

I always use nuetral. After having 3 95 motors crankwalk (whatever the reason may have been) I dont want to give the thrust bearing any reason to die on me. 6 bolt or not ;)

If you hold the clutch in while waiting at a light, you'll be wearing out the clutch more than the TOB.

In a previous car of mine, when i pushed in the clutch, i heard a hissing type of sound. that was a worn out TOB. Driving wasnt really affected, just the sound.

With the clutch pedal in, you can't be wearing the clutch, since it is disengaged. The full pedal pressure will however be applied to both the TOB and the thrust bearing.
