Hi, I have just purchased a used 2003 MR2 and it came with only one key. I called my local dealer and he told me he didn't think it had a transponder key. I think it does! Now can I just buy a blank key, get it cut and program it myself? Or do I have to take it to a reputable dealer or good locksmith. I feel very vunerable just having the one key. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

why should you buy it.... I would make them find the key or rekey your locks........

unless you like someone to steal your car. Which i have heard happen. Sence the dealer has your home addy. and a key.

Well I went to my local locksmith he stuck my key in a machine and it is a transponder key. Sad when a Toyota dealer does not even know his own products. Now for programming. The locksmith gave me these directions.
To erase all keys but one.
1.Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2.Insert an existing master key into the ignition cylinder. Do not turn the key fro the off (lock) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
4. Within twenty seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal seven times.
5. The security light will flash, indicating all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
6. Remove the igintion key from the ignition cylinder within 10 seconds. It will be the only key still programmed to work.

To program new keys.
1. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2. Insert Master key into ignition cylinder
3. Cycle the the ignition cylinder from on to off 5 times.
4. Open and close the "driver side" door six times.
5. Remove the Master Key and insert the new duplicate key.
6. TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON.
7. The new key will be registered after 60 seconds. The THEFT light on the dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.

Whew. Now this is taken from a photocopy of the Locksmiths book. However in the Sequoia forum the nuber six step to prgram a new key says DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON. Anyone know who is correct? Kinda strange that this one step is capitalized both on my copy and the Sequoia post yet they say exactly the opposite. Thanks Bob
