Another Fuel Pump Problem

89 Chevy C1500. I did a fuel pressure test and it only held 3psi for 5 seconds, then drops to zero pretty fast. I tried clamping the return fuel line after the pump ran for 2 seconds in aux. mode or whatever, and it held the pressure, but it was still only 3psi. The spec. is supposed to be 9-13psi. I guess this means I need a new fuel pump.

Would this contribute to my mileage problem possibly, and does anybody know any decent pumps that aren't really spendy? I have a hard time going up hills, and it kinda has the feeling of valve float at high rpms, is that just cuz there isn't enough fuel pressure for it maybe? Any info or help would be great thanks.

If you haven't yet, you may want to change out the fuel filter. It could well be causing the problems you're seeing, and they're cheap and easy to swap. I'd check that first before considering dropping the tank and pulling the fuel pump.

Ya, that's all I can think of too. Isn't your fuel pump mounted on the passenger side of the engine block?? If so, I would simply replace it. New ones should only be like $10 or so...same price as replacing all of your fuel filters

I looked up the fuel pump location on AllData or some program at my shop class and im almost positive I remember it saying that it's in the tank, plus I don't see it in the engine bay anywhere heh. As for the filter, I don't know when it was last replaced and all, but I put in fuel injector cleaner stuff every time I put in any gas. I'm pretty sure the filter is bad too, but with the fuel pump only running 3psi (Spec is 9-13psi) and then dropping to ZERO pressure within 5 seconds, shouldn't I replace the pump along with the filter?

Anyways...I put in braided steel brake and fuel lines a few months ago and dropping the tank wasn't really hard at all. I'm just wondering if the fuel pump working like that could majorly contribute to my mpg problem, and the whole bogging and sometimes stalling if I try to go more than a quarter throttle from idle or stop, or should I keep looking around and find another problem? Could the pump and filter alone really make the truck run so bad?

If you are getting 3psi of fuel pressure, your fuel pump is finished. And due to the hassle of dropping the tank and putting in a new pump, don't waste your time with anything else than GM. A pump from GM will range from $70 to $100. Obviously you will save if you change out the pump yourself. Plus GM usually includes a warranty, up to lifetime. Also, change the fuel filter if you don't know when it has been changed last. It's worth the $15 or so.
