i have a mini cooper tamiya from 1983. there were no TS sprays back then so it says X-5 as body color. which TS do you recommend for that?
also i dont have primers in my country so what can i use for a primer? i have a TS-26 (pure white). can i use it as a primer?. it is a shiny white so i should use sand paper between coats. am i correct?

What country is that?

Anyway, I am sure (read: *SURE*) there is primer in your country. Go to a car shop and ask them. (you need plastic primer)

No, don't use any paint as primer - that sort of defies the purpose ;)

x-5 is tamiya's green paint so for a TS spray u might want to check out TS-9 British Green or TS-43 Racing Green which are close matches.
It would not be a good idea to use white spray as a primer coz afterall u would normaly use a primer under the white spray. I use auto primer which i get in huge 500ml cans from Halfords in UK, look for something similar.

turkey. any plastic primer does the job? dont they have different thickness and so on? ill try to find one and try.

also cant i use flat white too?

last qusetion. i decided to paint the mini cooper in pearl white. is it a good/wise selection for a newbie like me?

oh i forgot to tell. the original plastic parts for the mini cooper is already white. do i still need a primer if i want to paint in pearl white?

YES YOU NEED PRIMER AND THE BASE PLASTIC COLOUR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT! Wait until Dan sees this :) :lol2:

Painting white can be a real bitch, but hey, one's got to learn, right?

Hehe, newbie. It's OK, it's all in good humour. I'm a very nice guy, trust me.

Have you read the "Important" threads on top? Especially the tips (look who was the inspiration for that one:)) and the instructions on painting the bodies, and you'll be just fine.

I think the guys have covered this one well! Yep, primer is for preparing the surface of the model and gripping the plastic, and not for neutralising colours!

I agree with flyonthewall TS9 or TS43 are the closest matches for x5

seeing as it is a mini the better out of those two would be TS9 British Racing Green

Can't agree with you. As he decided to paint it whaite, I wasn't going to post it, but I have to say that X-5 is nowhere near TS9 or TS43. The TS43 paint is much darker, and TS9 is even darker than that! Go with white! :)

Have you thought about "AMG Metallic Deep Green" by Tamiya ??.

Different shade of green but looks really good.

yes "pearl white"!!!

any tips from pros? i mean things i should concentrate on while doing the "pearl white". it will be my first "white" so is there any process special or different than other colors i did like racing green or gun metal?

If pearl is somewhat translucent, use black for the base color, and that will give the surface an extra depth. If pearl is pretty much solid, (like you add pearl powder to gloss white,) then base color can be white or light gray. Pearl is interesting, but difficult, so do some experiment and find the combination you like.
