strut assm, tune-up, tailpipe, using logic

Just bought a '85 318i.
On the outside, even my mother thinks it's a neat little car. It runs, has new brakes and rotors, alternator, waterpump, and adequate general maint. signs, but with who knows how many miles over the dead odo 308911, I'm a little weary about dropping bucks. A tune up is necess. as she idles at 1700rpm and the hole in the tailpipe makes her sound like a stockcar. Kind of fun, though it won't pass inspection. I bought her as a second vehicle -hoping for fun. Feed the ego, you know? :) She's in storage, SAFELY! I disconnected the batt. just after locking the keys inside. :banghead: Brainfart! That's $60 I wished to spend on something other than a locksmith.
Question#1
Can I replace the strut assm w/o a manual or prior know-how? :screwy:
#2 I thought I read somewhere here that 85 318is don't have a timing belt.
Rear floor board (pan?) is rusted through completely. I think due to inadequate rinsing/washing after ice and snow storms in MO. Rest body is better than expected with only rust behind wheel wells.
#3 How many would use the opp. to replace things like the pan over time? I know its a tech forum, but I'm new to body work. :screwy:
I'm not holding cash, really. I could use the warnings or bravos, since I bought her for a franklin, and she'll go from point a to b. Trick is getting into her again w/o a locksmith, and driving her to Phoenix.
# Am i completely out of my mind?
Hope I'm not wasting your time, i certainly regard any help with the highest respect. Thanks.
