Hi every1.......2 days ago when i got in my suv i tried 2 start it like i do every night but engine wouldn't start with out hiting the gas pedal. B4 i was able to start it with out the gas pedal. Also RPM are 500 rpm/m and they used 2 be around 1000 rpm/m 1500 rpm/m when first started. No snow yet so weather is not very cold. When i let the gas pedal go it shuts down or when i hit the brake and switch from P to D .....like i said the only diference i noticed is the rpm......any ideas?? ty in advance

I think i fixed it...kind of stupid if it did....i just holded the gas pedal 2 a 1000 rpm and pop open the hood as soon as i did that rpm stayed a 1000 rpm w/o holding the gas pedal and then went to 700 or 800 rpm....it's been 2 days so far and stil works fine...wil let u know if it happens again...knoking on wood

I just fixed a similar symptom yesterday. My issue started when I had to open the accelerator before the engine would start in cold weather. Once the engine warmed up a bit, it ran fine. This was the case until Monday when it would not start when warm. After chasing vacuum lines and ensuring no pvc/ egr leaks, I tested the Idle Air Control Valve. It was stuck closed. After a little carb cleaner and prying it open, the engine began to start just fine. After ensuring this was the root cause, I replaced it for $54. Replacing the valve was not as difficult as I expected; less than ten minutes in and out.

I have a 2000 5.4. Mine was just behind the throttle body. It has two small bolts (8mm) that point to the left front fender. It's just above the pcv hose meets the intake.

I also had a simular problem. appeared to fix it's self for a while, then got worse. It turned out to be the idle speed control valvue.

It's a little harder to find and replace. It's real close to the fire wall and the bolts are on the back side (at least on my 1999) so I decided not to do it my self. I took it to GoodYear. They charged me $67 for the part and $53 for labor..... but I had them run the Diag which cost additional $89. The diag confirmed that was the problem.
