during my trans install, the air checkvalve on the tube that connects to the back of the heads broke off, leaving the large nut-lookign thing open, resulting in a large exhaust leak. what is the best way to fix this without trying to plug the heads?

Send in some pictures to get a better look at the problem.
If possible, you may want try to glue the valve back together using J.B. Welds epoxy.

You can plug the back of the heads by flipping the fittings over....If it's an offroad or aftermarket cat setup anyway.....
Then you just weld the fitting on the H-pipe up and eliminate all the crap from that side of the engine bay...

J.B. weld had occurred to me, flipping the fittings over hadn't... that's a good idea... is it doable with the motor in the car? do i just cut the pipes off? and, will orange RTV work?

I slapped mine on dry. No problems. Was done with the motor in the car. Hardest part is cutting the pipe that runs from one head to the other. Used a dremel and cutoff wheel.
As for the rest of it, I crimped the end near the H pipe and welded a bead across it, then removed ALL the rest of the piping (and the smog pump) went in the garbage.
