it's inside the tank

yup, its in the tank, part of the fuel sending unit, you have to drop the gas tank to get to it.

as far as your problem, what your grandad is talking about referrs to carbed cars with a mechanical pump at the engine. when you ran out of gas those lines went empty, and even when you put gas in the tank, the mechanical pump couldnt create enough suction to pull the fuel all the way up the line, so you had to pour gas down it untill it was full, and then the pump could pull the gas normally. the electric pump in your gas tank, has more than enough power to overcome that problem, but it is actually located in the gasoline, and pushes the gas up the line, avoiding the problem all together.

what probly happend is that the pump burned up when you ran out of gas, because the pump relys on the gasoline in the tank to sap the heat away from it. no gas, pump motor overheats.

be prepared to swear :lol2:

you have to drop the torsion bars, and it's best jack up the chassis so the rear end will hang down, then fight to get the gas take out. then it's just a matter of turning a lock ring on the top of the tank to get the sending unit out. the fuel pump is held in with plastic snap clamps.

taking out the fuel tank is a pain in the ass, at work, we usually completely took out the rear axle to do it. other than that really its not too bad, take off the straps, and lower t out, but a word of warning, the fuel filler necks have a habit of breaking on those gas tanks when you pull them out, so be careful. the lock ring may give you trouble, we have a special tool at work to get it on and off. but you can probly use a punch and a hammer to do it.

as far as the interchangeable nature of the fuel pumps, i would assume so, but dont quote me on that. i dont have access to the parts counter anymore :( so i cant run down and ask.
