Removing Scratches From Windows?

I recently purchased a Hasegawa kit that had obviously been sitting a while (box had war injuries). When I opened it up I was deeply madened to see that the clear window piece had broken off its tree and had been slightly scrathed. Is there any paper or compound light enough to buff it without hazing it over?

I, personally, would look for the stuff that is used to remove scratches from the glass on watches. I have seen it at a clock repair shop. It was kinda expensive, though.

Some people do this, I've never tried it myself but I've heard it gets good results:

Basically, go over the scratch with finer and finer grades of sandpaper until the area of the scratch is just a cloudy area, then go over the cloudy area with toothpaste and a cotton cloth (no gel pastes, please!) or some special polish to restore the shine.
