Power steering

The lower steering U joing has a black hose sitting against it that goes to the power steering fluid resevoir. The hose is worn probably about half way through, is this a bad thing? is the hose supposed to be up against it? I can't move the hose over because it conects like right there?? :confused: BWT 95 cherokee sport

I would highly suggest that you replace the hose as it is a fluid return hose and if worn completely through, can lead to losing fluid and damaging the pump. suggest to try to get a longer piece if it could be moved away from the steering, another thought would be that the pump is moved to tighten the belt. Is it streched to the point that the pump is closer to the shaft than it should be?

no, there is a connector on the steering box, where the hose plugs in, the hose is just against the u joint, I can't move to hose away because of the connector??

I guess that I don't have quite the same setup there :confused:

My steering pump moves in order to loosen or tighten the belt and from the looks of it, mine would do the same if I had to move the pump farther out. Would check to see if that is your problem and, if so, do you have the correct belt (ie. length)... That is just my guess there since I can't see what you are looking at. Does that help any, or still not close?

I think this will fix it, first replace the hose, 25.00 at napa, hold the hose up out of harms way than fully tighting the two fittings, this should hold it up. I just replaced mine, hint..for more room at the bottom conection remove the airbox!!

My mistake, a close examination showed that the connector isn;t attached to the steering bix but, bent against it.
