B16 problems, ITR piston issue

Hey,

I'm working on helping out a friend of mine who is building a B16. He has put ITR pistions in the motor, and when he turns it over, the pistons are coming out of the top of the bottom end.

He told me that he is using the factory B16 crank and rods. Any ideas as to whats going on? He wants to try and fix it by using a thicker headgasket, although I would say that's not a very good way to solve the problem :screwy:

In any event, I'm just trying to get a little more information on what could have gone wrong.

Thanks,
-Jacob

A thicker gasket might make a small diff, but if the pistons are coming up as high as you said, it wont solve the problem. I would think the ITR pistons would fit with no Problem... Were they mounted correctly?

The reason they won't fit is because the deck height on an ITR is higher than a B16A2, and the ITR's stroke is longer to reach its deck's top.

B18C5 stroke=87.2mm
B16A2 stroke=77mm

Aves, how far are they sticking out of the block? My advice is for him to put the old pistons back in.

(fun facts of the day: ITR's and CTR's have the same deck height, but only a CTR's pistons are swappable with an Si and the ITR's aren't. A set of CTR pistons will raise the compression of an Si, and ITR pistons will lower it, simply because of the piston shape) ;)

that is a very good fact of the day ric
