I was just told my abs pump was going bad. In the last few feet of braking my peddle jumps and a motor sounds as if it's spooling down. Took it to a shop and they said about $1500 to replace the pump and that it is pretty common for this issue to occur around my year. Is this common? Could it just be the sensor as i read in another post? What happens if i just take out the pump and what does that take to do?
Any comments/help would be appreciated.

it could be a sensor or it could be the pump. have the abs system scanned. i dont know if portable home use scanners can access the abs system, so you might have to bring it to the dealer. dont go to a non-ford dealer as they have no idea because they also dont have the ford diagnostic equipment you need to properly diag the abs system. dont mess with abs. have the dealer do it.

That sounds like what the ABS pump does when its working properly, unless it does it on dry pavement too. It could be your pump but also could be a sensor acting up. Explorers like to act crazy sometimes. :)

My 96 does the same thing...ever since I bought it. Friend who worked at a couple dealers told me it's most likely a wheel sensor and no big deal since the ABS works as it should on slick roads...
