Yesterday my car started overheating on the way from work and smoke was coming out of the hood water was coming out of the overfill resovoir and I made it home by putting my car in neutral and shutting off engine coasting for a while then starting on the fly and away I went so as not to get into the red zone. I did this for about three to five miles when I got home I was parking it and just as I got in the drive way it shut off and now after waiting for a while to cool off I can't get it to turn on I believe the thermostat may be the problem because my fans were working. Assuming I fix my overheating problem by chaging out my thermostat any one have any Ideas what else could have messed up during this overheating problem that has not not allowd my car to start it turns over just fine. I will keep you guys posted on anything else I find in the mean time. Thaks guy talk to you.

All that heat may have blown the head gasket.

Hey all I have a question I have not yet changed thermostat but am in the process but I just want to ask. The car started fine in the morning but as I let the car heat up 5 to 10 minutes it doesnt start any more seems as though lack of fuel turns over nice just don't start. I leave it sit for a while and it starts up with out a problem anyone have an idea what could be going on any suggestions greatly appreciated. Remembering that the only thing that was wrong to begin wiht was the fact that the car overheated what could be going on?

It doesn’t sound like the issues are related especially since you can start it. Does it stall or just not start when warm? Here are a few things you can check/replace.

1)Air and fuel filter. If they haven’t been changed in a while do it. Try starting the car without the air filter.

2)Does the fuel pump work? Turn your key to the “ON” position not “Start” and have someone listen either in the trunk or under the tank. The pump will turn on if working. You must give it time to reset between turning it on and off. Check your fuel pressure. Spray starting fluid down the throttle body. Does the engine keep running as long as you feed it fuel?

3)Spray throttle body cleaner down it’s throat and clean the plate.

4)Clean your EGR, PVC valve and IAC sensor

5)Verify that all plug wires are connected properly.

6)Use jumper cables to ground your engine properly. Put one cable end on the engine away from fuel or spark then ground it to the body. Does it work? If so, find your actual motor ground it looks like a shoe lace and clean the contact points. Sry, I don’t know where it’s located.

This should at least get you started in the right direction.

The fuel is the key to all starts lol. It must have been a coincidence how after overheating my fuel pump stopped working or might I say at the same time. Well close enough to throw me in a loop. I went back to the basics looked for spark and fuel found fuel to be the problem I could not hear my pump when I turned key. I took off the hose that fed the system and tried turning the key nothing no fuel. I checked fuses and then checked relay for fuel pump all was ok. checked to see if voltage was getting to plug on pump (this was hard to do without taking tank down but I managed). I fed voltage directly to pump still no sound. So I took tank down and was going to change out module but at a $400 cost I decided to see if I could repair it after all I spend my life repairing machines what's a little pump like this to me lol. Well after cleaning the dam thing off and totally disassembling the whole unit I did a continuity check on the dam motor and it seamed to be ok so I took and supplied 12 volts to the little motor pump assembly and it spun like hell spewing out all it had in it. I was still not sure this thing was going to work so I did the unthinkable I grabbed a toothbrush some soap detergent and started to clean out both filters they had some black sticky crap on them I figured no sense in buying the filters if the pump is going bad because you can't just buy the pump they sell the whole assembly. So I put all this back together and presto I have a car that starts and runs for now anyway I still don't know if the pump is going bad or it just got some crap in it I'll soon find out I guess. Previos to that I had changed my thermostat and that was a hell in it self let me tell you guys it aint no piknic. you have to take the passenger side wheel off and the splash guarding to get to the alternator take and loosen the belt tensioner and then take the alternator off but to get it out you must take the motor dip stick out so you have enough room to play with I took the compressor off and let it hang too to give me room to remove the third bolt on the thermostat housing (yes there is a third bolt lol). Just so you guys know it has a Oring type seal which didn't come with the thermostat I bought so I used the old I don't recommend you do that cause of all the work that has to be done just to change a thermostat. All in all I think this car is ready for the road again I am still considering changing out the fuel module so as not to have to worry about it but well see. If you have any questions on how to change out your thermostat on a 2001 sebring sedan 2.7 engine let me know I have become quite and expert lol. Thanks to all who keep this forum alive with the way tecnoligy is changing now a days we could use a little help from others just to be able to work on our own cars. You also need to be able to take half you car a part to do anything I was dreading having to change my water pump, if the thermostat didn't fix my problem, it's in the engine. Thanks alot mr bearcatdon you have been much help.
PS. I don't know if the filters would cause the pump not to turn I mean they where dirty but I don't think they would cause motor not to turn unless something was caught in motor your thoughts on this would be apreciated. Thanks again.

I agree with you on the filter issue. A clogged filter will stop fuel to enter but shouldn't stop the pump. I think the key is in your quote: "Well after cleaning the dam thing off " Sounds to me that you may have had a bad connection. If the impeller was jammed you should have had a least a slight vibration when energized. If you haven't changed your in line fuel filter I would do it especially since the tank filter was so dirty.
I'm glad you got it fixed cheap, minus your time. As complicated as cars are today we still have to rely on the essentials. An engine needs 3 things fuel, air and spark to work. There are a few electronic exceptions to the rule but most times it will run if it has those 3 elements. A car that won't start is usually the easiest to fix. Hope this repair holds up....sounds to me it will.

Good luck and thanks for the feedback.

If alot of water/steam was released under the hood, you may have saturated some engine component with water. I would first check your plug wires. Again, sounds like something under the hood got too wet.

My car shut off on me while I was on the road as I was coming to a stop It took a little to get it back started up but finally did and ran fine and got me home but I think there is still something wrong with my fuel delivery. I had already replaced fuel pump anyway the codes I'm getting on this car p1694, p0340, p1282, p1495 p1193. Here's a list of the codes and what they mean:
.
340No camshaft signal being received by the computer
1193Inlet air temperature sensor voltage is wrong
1282The fuel pump relay circuit seems to be having a problem.
1495Leak Detection Pump (LDP) pressure switch problem - the solenoid circuit.
1694No messages received from the powertrain control module-Aisin transmission.
