Since my friend blew a head gasket on his 240 coupe (not sure the year but it is btwn 91-93) he has been driving around his other 240 which happens to be an 89 hatch. Well anyways, he is thinking of selling his coupe with the blown head gasket. Since he is my friend he would hook me up with a good deal but i wana know is replacing the head gasket on a 240 hard? I would probibly only buy it if i could do the repair myself or get it dont cheap. So can anyone tell me if its a hard repair to do? And if not, is it worth buying the car for like $500 and paying however much it will cost to get it fixed? (which is how much?)
thanx

If nothing else has gotten messed up from the leakage i.e. the oil or coolant. then it shouldn;t be that bad. in a nut shell
1. take off valve cover
2. oh shit actually sorry
I can't tell you I never had to deal with a chain and spockets. good luck

$500.00? If the bodys straight and everything else is in good condition then its a steel. even if you have to replace/rebuild the engine

for 500 it sure is a steal!!
easy task.. you need 3 tools for replacing the head gasket..
a rachet, a tork meter(spelling?) and some wrench..
If its the forst time you do this, just take picture of your engine before and while youre disassembling, you will be sure to put everything back into its place...
This is the basic order you should disasemble the things...
ECCS and related vacuum/air filter elements, valve cover, Intake manifold(dont forget the intake manifold Bracket uner the manifold), Fuel rail, and cavuum rail right under it, header, alternator, and coolling tubing going into the cyl head... then the cylinder head... Wala..
replace the gasket and rebuild.. easy shot.. around 8-9hours total
Dont forget to retain that timing chain.. or it will fall right into your oil pan :)!!
if you need the torq info, I got them.. just shoot me a PM
ooo and if you dont buy the 240, give me a PM too.. i Will take it!!!

Heres what you do:
1) Buy the car
2) Buy another engine from a junkyard
3) Put the junkyard engine in the car
4) Rebuild the other engine and use it when the junker craps out.
Or if you insist, just bitch up and take it to a shop

i agree with nissanfanatic, or you could buy the car, buy another junkyard engine and sell me your blown engine.
Or you could buy the junkyard engine and then rebuild the blown one for maybe a turbo setup and then swap the engines again and have a turbo ka. Thats what i would do....as a matter of fact why isnt your friend already doing this, he has another car to drive while in the building process!!!!!

orrr buy the car then pull pull out the engine then buy another engine from a junk yard throw it int he trunk then sell me the car for $700..
hehe, yes it would be a good deal, and its not that hard to replace the head gasket yourself, just read up in manuals and stuff before you jump into it, and there is nothing wrong with taking the car into the sho to do it, but you will be losing money through them because they are going to rip you off, unless you know a guy that knows a guy or something...
i personally never taken a car to a shop because i keep telling myself i got skillz... even tho i have blown an engine before hahaha.. but hey people learn from their mistakes and how else would you learn about engine then do it yourself? what best way than to have hands on experience? you can read and look at drawing all you want, but nothing will teach you more than hands on.... you will make mistakes, but you will be a better man after you fix it yourself .. good luck!!

If he had the money for a SR, do you think he would be buying a $500 240 and asking about replacing the head gasket himself?

Lol right on the money nissanfanatic. Unfortunitly however my friend that i was going to buy the car from just crashed his 240 hatch today, so he has decided to keep the coupe and he will swap the engine from his hatch into it and scrap the hatch. Sucks for me, i woulda bought the coupe :-(

Actually, if he I had the money for an SR I would try to get a cheap car so that I don't waste my money on a good engine I'm gonna swap out anyways, and i would try to replace the head gasket myself to be able to drive it in the mean time and then if I decide to not keep this car, I could sell it for MUCH MUCH more then I paid for it since it's drivable.
