Just How Fast Is The SL?

Ok guys here is the scoop. I right now have a ford focus zx3 and am trading it in for a 3000gt. I of course am dieing for a vr4 but as things stand it will prolly be the sl. I have heard from one of my friends that these things are extremely slow. He has a pretty nice civic, he beat the SL by about 4 car lengths. I have waxed his civics ass but have beat alot of fast cars myself just in my little car. So I really guess i just wanna know how fast these things really are? I know they are heavy and have 220 BHP stock. I am looking for 1/4 mile times or 0-60's. Also i wonder if some simple performance parts would fix this little problem.

Okay I think it is a misconception when people say the SL is a tank. Yes it isn`t nearly as fast as a VR-4 but it is not slow. I know this because I have one and have never lost a race. I have only done minior modifactions so far. When you say he beat a SL did you actually see it happen and if so was it an auto, or did the driver even know what he was doing? I find it hard to believe a civic even beating the SOHC 3000gt which was a total piece of shit for the 3000s. Unless this friend has added turbos or something to his car I really doubt he did or like I said the 3000gt didn`t know how to drive his car.

well i know his civic has a cold air and full exhaust set up. but i do not know if the 3000 was auto or not. I am guessing it was prolly 5 speed and the guy doesnt know how to drive. I dont see a civic ever touching a 3k

^^ I totally agree. I have lost to ONE Civic in my car and he was boosting and on juice. I just didnt know it till he flew past me like I was sitting still when I was at 130mph. This was all in my SOHC 5 speed. There are definitely too many misconception out there about our cars. Most people I talk too think vr4s are mid to high 14 second tanks.

well from the SL is a high 14, low 15 second car (the DOHC not the SOHC), and 0-60 my best was around 6 seconds...but that was timing it on the radio...still gotta do it w/ a stop watch and a friend. But slow? no, unless you have auto, then its slow from start, but from a roll kicks some butt.

Also if that civic beat the 3S, then the 3S was no doubt the SOHC 160 HP automatic (disgrace to the 3S society).

Exactly, I`m not sure why Mitsubishi made a more econmical version (the crappy SOHC) of a sports car it makes no sence to me at all.

they were probably trying to boost sales with a cheap 3S, because people were buying new corvettes for the price of the new 3000's.

Its because dodge ceaced production of its SOHC stealth (all stealths) and they thought there was a market for them, much to the dismay of 3000GT fans.

Yea, but wait a second, is it really all that more economical?? I mean, doesn't the DOHC get just as good if not sometimes better mileage than the SOHC??? I thought I read that it was, but I know that auto consumer guide online says that the DOHC engine gets 19/25 and the SOHC gets 19/24 mileage....

It takes quite a lot for a civic to get to where the SL is (not to mention the vr4). I have a friend that owns a civic and has been talking smack for ohhhhh um ... i'd say a good 5months now, even before i got my SL. Saying how he was gonna smoke me, this and that ect. ugh! Still not faster than me. He's gonna get a turbo installed and he's gonna get lots of work done to his car, but by that time i'll have me a vr4 :). I have other civic friends with "chips" or whatever, that have tried to race me on the highway ..... i pass them as if they were stopped.
Don't take crap from civic owners. Most of their cars come with about 100hp stock, maybe even less so who are they to call us slow? Dude you should buy your SL and drive it for a while, then drive a stock honda civic and compare the 2 LoL! Because it would seriously seem like you're going NOWHERE with the 95 lbs. of torque civics have. The SL isn't up there with the fastest cars, but it's certainly not slow :P

I have gotten upwards of 30mpg in my SOHC on trips. The one that I got 29 mpg included about 2 hours of 80mph, which is about 3500-3700 RPM if I remember right. Way up there on a SOHC with its crappy 6k redline. It also included about 100miles of around town driving. If I would have stayed out of the throttle and not did around town driving I may have been looking at 34mpg.;)
