Engine Valve Or Engine Ping Noise??

I HAVE A 1997 4.0L I-6...HAS 93,000 MILES ON IT RIGHT NOW
WHEN I GOT THE BASTARD A YEAR AGO i put new spark plugs in it ( the old ones looked terrible ). I never did change the wires or the distributor or distributor cap. I never did have the timing checked either. Well for the past 6 months i've been hearing this noise especially during stiff accelerations. It sounds like a rattling valve or possibly a pre-detonation ( knock or ping ) in the cylinders...but i'm not sure which..... I'm not really that mechanically experienced.
I was told by someone to run premium grade gas ( like 89 or 91 octane ).....well as long as i filled up with premium grade gas i didnt seem to hear the problem anymore ( but i can't afford to keep filling up with premium ). Also I went to Autozone and bought some fuel system treatment....and i used that regularly about every 4th tank with 87 octane....this seemed to get rid of the problem as well.

What do i need to do to fix this and still fill up with 87 octane without adding fuel additives or treatments.
I just want to know---WHAT--THINGS---could be causing this?

First thing I would do is change your cap and rotor, and perhaps even the plug wires - after all they're almost 8 years old. Make sure your air filter is clean and also check the inside of your intake to make sure it's not gummed up anywhere. Once these are done, hopefully your problem will go away.

what does a tune up on a wrangler consist of??
when does timing need to be checked and /or corrected

I'd say a tune up is what you've done plus what I've suggested -plugs, cap, rotor. Add to that, wires(every few years) and air filter every 15K.

Has doing all this fixed the problem?

As far as adjusting the timing, unless there's a problem, go with the owner's manual. You said the vehicle was ok, then started making the noise in the last 6 months...

Definitely change the cap, wires, etc. Also, it's due for the throttle body/injector service. I had it done right after buying my 97 at 96K and it's like a new car!
