Hi all, I have a 98 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4. The motor is a 7.4liter 454. Heres the problem....

The truck will not fire up right away after turning the key. It turnes over for about 5-7 second (on average) before it will fire up. I have changed out the simple stuff such as fuel pump (crapped out on me so it needed to be done anyways), air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and put in some fuel injection cleaner in my fuel. Once the truck has started it runs great. Idles, drives, accelerates with out any issues at all. Thats whats frustrating me. Other than the starting problem I have no issues with the way it runs.

Should I start looking at the fuel injection or does someone have any other suggestions?

thx in advance

It sounds like your fuel pump. There are fittings where you can put a pressure gauge on the input lines and verify it, but I am not familiar with them. Find a service manual for your truck. It should give you more info. If you're not familiar with it, the fuel pump is in the tank and either the bed needs to be removed or the tank dropped. I removed the bed to get to mine. It's pretty pricey as well so be forewarned.

Oh and if you're thinking it can't be the pump since it runs fine after it starts, yes it can be. it could also be a fuel pressure leak from the tank to the fuel injectors.

Here's the reason I'm having a hard time believing its the fuel pump. The fuel pump I currently have in there is 6 months old, and this starting problem has been there before the pump was changed.

Could it be possible that 2 different pumps are faulty? Yes I guess that could happen, I'm just saying I would believe its a real long shot....wouldn't you think?

I will also start looking for leaks while the gas line is pressured up.

Thx for the feedback, this is really getting frustrating!
