camshaft sensor problems

I changed the camshaft sensor on my 1995 4.3 W engine because it was giving me a P0340 code. Everything went back together fine I did not change the cap and rotor(just changed about 250mi ago). Cleared the code and started it. Now it idles fine for a couple of seconds almost dies and then catches itself and goes thru this cycle every 3 or 4 seconds. If I try to give it some gas it stumbles and pops, the p0340 code came back. The plug wires seem good those were also replaced with cap and rotor. I rechecked the sensor and it is not damaged I thought maybe the rotor screw was hitting it but no. I should have left it alone it was running good before this. Any help would be great.

P0340 Camshaft Sensor Circuit Malfunction
You sure you installed the correct circuit for that year of truck?

I dont understand what you mean by the correct circuit? I asked for a cam sensor at the auto parts store. It looked the same as the one I pulled out. I have the vortec motor with PCM under the hood right side. With the EDI distributor.

Check the hoses on back of the intake. It's quite possible that you knocked one of them off. This can cause this problem. Also double check your wires... the cylinders are set up as:
6 5
4 3
2 1
+
(the + is the fan)
Again, just double check them. When you pulled the cap/rotor did you pull the upper plenum to make it easier? If so then double check your upper plenum gasket. It could have torn. Just some things to think about.

I did not take the plenum off. The vacuum hose look okay. According to the book and the numbers on top of the distributor cap the wires are
6 5
4 1
2 3
+
6 5
4 1
2 3

My diagram referenced the engine, not the diustributor cap, if your diagram is referencing your engine, you are most certainly incorrect on your wiring. The pic below references the engine (old style dist cap though but the engine is correct)

Correct... The cylinders are the same on all models as is the firing order. The EDI distributor has the wires crossing over in the cap itself probably due to the side mounted wires so the wires are connected alittle diffrent than the older models besides it was running fine before this and I marked the wires before removing them. I will let you all know if I find anything.

Check the wiring from the sensor to the harness.
Make sure the wiring connector is firmly in place.

Found it... The new aftermarket rotor had longer screws so on start up the longer screws chewed up the cam sensor grounding it out and blowing the fuse for the cam sensor.
