any one know why my 87 cherokee's I6 engine is whinning? it happends all the time and is very very slight but annoying. It also sounds like a diesel when going up hills or under fairly hard acceleration. i was thinking that the exhas manifold might have somthing to do with the whinning after reading other threads but any way to check that, or is there anything else that could be making that noise?
thanks,
nick

the diesel sound is engine knock, ping, try the next higer grade gas. check your knock sensors too. the winning could be your alt, water pump..hard to tell someone without looking and listening

As Scuba says, the whinning may be from a failing bearing from one of the sources he mentions. Does the whining change with engine speed? Does it get worse/better when cold or hot? Check the tension on your belt.

In addition to the above, power steering pumps can also whine, especially if the fluid is low, or if they have become worn or damaged internally.
