cruse control wont set

has anyone had any problems with there cruse control setting? i cant get the switch to set. am i gonna have to replace the system?

Me to. My 97' GLX cruise control is working intemitintly and when it works it only stays on for 5 minutes before un-engaging on it's own?? Is this as easy as replacing the fuse?

On both cars the most common problem is with the vacuum part of the brake (& clutch) switch. They can also get leaks in the vacuum hose that goes from the switches through the firewall and over beside the battery.

Where does one even begin when troubleshooting the cruise? My '92 Jetta cruise control just flat out doesn't work. Are there tests I can do or things to look for. How do I get at the stuff. The fuse is not blown.

I have a '95 Jetta GL that has a tempermental cruise control as well. It's very strange. I wish it were something easy to fix, but it probably isn't. I doubt the maintenance guide book even addresses the issue. BTW does anyone have any opinion on when replacing the suspension on both axles, is it a good idea to put a more premium strut on the front than the oem compliant shock install i put on the rear?

I have same problem with 97 Jetta. To add to Boschmann's comment, if the vacuum lines test out then (which mine did), then I was told it's either the switch or the controller. The switch is $200+ and the controller even more. Good luck!

I got a 97 GLX and mine does the same thing. I don't know about the vaccum lines being messed up...but if it is the switch, i'm not too worried bout it to go and spend $200+ on it. Guess we'll all have to deal with the s**t! :banghead: :mad:

Newer VW's (99+) can have the cruise control activated and de-activated w/ a vw scan tool. It will act like the cruise just doesnt work.

I have a 98 Jetta GL which also has an intermittent cruise. I know that it has a control module situated behind the light switch on the dash and someone has told me that it might be intermittent due to a leaky capacitor in the module but I haven't looked into it yet. I'm not too sure on how to remove the dash to get at the module.

Boy this sounds all too common. My 87's cruise died years ago, was told it was a $400 replacement. Would almost be worth it if there wasn't so much else wrong with it right now. Poor car needs to be put to rest, going on 200K

I just bought a 97 Jetta GLX and my cruise will work when you first start the car up and will work for about 4 to 5 miles and then kick off. If it is cold outside the cruise might work a little longer, but not by much. I talked to a VW dealership and they said that it is the cruise control modulator, which is the control unit which is located below the dash behind the interior panel. Anyway, the dealer said that this module would cost $325, being the cheap person I am, I bought one off of E-bay for $50. You can also get them at any junk yard from a wrecked car because if my research is right, any Jetta, GTI, or Golf of that same body style has the same cruise module. I am waiting for mine to arrive, but as soon as it does, I will install it and let you all know if it fixes the problem.

Can you expand on this?

No scan tool has touched my car. Can it be deactivated by some other means and ractivated with the scan tool?

sometimes disconnecting the battery will de-activate the system. this is only on mk4 cars. if the light does not show up the system will need to be "re-activated"
