I just got a used 97 Cavalier z24 last month and I am having major problems with it. The check engine light kept coming on so I took it into the shop and they put a new EGR valve in. Since then the check engine light still comes on and the car bucks like crazy in first, second, and third gear on acceleration. It always bucked a little around 80 in 5th gear. I have had a lot of mechanics look at it and no one can figure out what the problem is. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated because I might be getting ride of it because I can't fix it. Thanks

Listen I would suggest taking it to an automotive shop and get them to hook it up a a scanner. The scanner usually points out the problem. it could be somthing simple as plugs but you never know. it sounds as if your either not getting enough fuel or getting to much. If its getting too much it will run rich and the scanner will tell you if it is running rich or lean. It is suppose to fluxuate between rich and lean but when it sticks at one or the other then you will know somethings wrong. Like I said just take it to a shop and get them to hook up to a scanners. Those things work wonders. I use them all the time. :)

When I first bought my 90 z24 it did the same thing. During hard acceleration, or when you leveled the speed out the car would buck pretty hard. Turned out the fuel filter was clogged, which had in turn clogged the injectors.

The next time you fill up, try using some fuel injection cleaner, also if you're using regular gas you might want to step up to a higher octane fuel.

Hey have ur mechanic check out the fuel pump, on those Z's (like mine) it doesn't show up till it's too late. Trust me you wanna get that thing checked ASAP, if it turns out that, that is OK. try NOS fuel system, it not oly cleans system but by the third time using it you see major improvements on performance pickup, not of the line really but when it hits third and the intake opens your feel the front actually lift as they open and then it's see ya' later. Not to be used as a substitute for fule line cleaner though. Get the line pumped. If you can afford it, try a stand alone fuel intake system, to bupass those problems in the future.
