96 Camry Check Engine Light blinking

My 96 Camry has its check engine light blinking and I took it to autozone but the guy there said he could not figure out where to connect the scanner. Any ideas how I can get the code read? I took it to a couple of shops and they want to charge $60 for scanning it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Your 96 should have the standard OBDII connector under the dash on the driver's side. That's where it is on my 98. I would try another Autozone if there is one close enough or look under the dash yourself for it if you know what it looks like. It sounds like the person at the first one didn't look very hard for it.

Not all '96 Camry's are OBD-2 compliant.Try this website for some good info on retrieving codes

To the left of the steering wheel, there is a storage pocket which flips open. Remove this and you will see a few fuses and an OBD connector. Why the wankers put it there behind what looks like an ashtray I will never know.

Pasco:

Thanks. You are right. It's absolutely moronic to put the connector there. Unfortunately, I took it to the mechanic and they charged me $65 to check it. They said it needed a tune up - one of the cylinders was clogged and they stuck me with a $300 bill. Oh Well! Live and Learn. THanks for your help mate.
