Cherokee name differences?

Hey guys in very new to jeeps and kind of new to cars in general.

I was wondering, because im getting a '92 'Cherokee Laredo', if I will be able to upgrade it much. When i read this 'all jeep' magazine for suspension lifts and bigger tires and grill guards it always says Cherokee 'XJ' and i dont know if the 'XJ' parts would also fit on my 'cherokee laredo'.

Like i said im new to jeeps so take it easy on me :smile:

O and could you tell me the best sites to find Laredo parts?

well this is going to be my first car (in highschool). My parents found a Cherokee Laredo for pretty cheap so i guess all i needa know is, is this vehicle able to off road half way descently? I dont usually see parts for the 'laredo' so im also asking is this model a descent one?

The Laredo is an XJ body style. Generally, Laredo, SE, Sport, Classic, and others are just names to denote the styling options of that particular model. These options can include mag wheel, power accessories (windows, door locks, etc), chrome body trim, etc. Some indicate a 4 cyl engine standard vs. others with the 6cyl.

So if i were to buy an XJ suspension kit, would it work for the Laredo?

One day i will become a genius at jeeps but for now im new to this stuff :p

a laredo is also the grand cherokee, it is not the same as an xj, sport, country classic ect. the laredo has coils in the rear the xj has leafsprings, get the jeep first, before you buy parts, and yes if it is 4 x 4 it is very good off road even stock

yeah i atleast know to buy the jeep first lol so i would have to buy coil suspension or sumthin along those lines?

a cheap way is to get coil spacers at each wheel, and taller shocks, i think you can get the spacers for less than 100.00, plus shocks and installation. anyway good luck and drive safely!!!!!

THX for you help! I would have never figured this out if it wasnt for you! and i may drive safe, maybe not lol. My aunt owns a farm so you know what that means :sunglasse

Here's a tip. since you are new to Jeeps, save your money and dont start modifying suspensions or other components until you are very familiar with your Jeep and its limitations. They are very capable off road when bone stock. Most off road suspensions make the on-road performance worse, so be sure about mods, or you might end up with something you will hate to drive.

So are you saying just off road with what it comes with? Sorry for my nubbishness here im just makin sure i dont mess up my first car.

I have taken my bone stock jeep cherokee XJ off road several times and it worked like a champ. The places were alot worse than dirt roads but not like the off-road challenges you see in magazines...MagicRat is very correct. The XJ does very well off-road with no mods. Once you get serious about the heavy off-road trek and you have some experience with the stock Jeep then plan your upgrades.

Ok that makes me feel better. My friends and I are in High School and they all have trucks, couple are 2wd, and all they do is off road behind a couple neighborhoods and stuff. Hope i beat a few of them back there =D

In fact, every one of 4 vehicles I own right now from work truck to my XJ sport are 4wd. Just bought the Cherokee last June. Learning the nuances of how my Jeep handles, fuel economy (or the lack thereof), modifications, even how the transfer case shifts, it all took some time.

I'm very happy with mine, I am planning some minor suspension mods and a couple of bolt on type engine mods. Unless your just gagging to jack it way up to make your friends oooo and aaah, I'd drive it a while, get a feel for it, then do your mods, or you can save your money for college...

Either way, if I were you, I'd go back and study every thread in this XJ Cherokee forum. There is a ton of learning to be had right here, many of my questions were answered just by looking through here, lots of good input and very helpful people!

Well im loving this jeep community so far!!

Im getting my jeep for like 2795 so leaves room for like $1000 worth of mods i can do. I know i will drive in around for a while to get the feel for it and yeah lots of my friends have jacked up their trucks lol. I'll take your advice though and learn more about cars and jeeps.

I got my jeep for 750, a 95 cherokee sport, bigger tires, 3" lift, towing kit, brake box all came with it... of course I had tofix it first the last owner decided that he liked it better on its side, all in all I have less than 1000 invested in it including the paint. all I needed was the glass front and side, windshield post, door post, and half the roof from a donor. and I love it the gas mileage sucks but oh well thats what you get form a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick... lol Becareful they do roll easily. I drove a 99 ford exploder and the pos firestone tire blew and I landed it on its side against a tree. Fords are crap right from the start though... lol

another simple question.

I know ppl say that XJ's are any jeep cherokees between 84-01'. Would a 93' grand cherokee considered an XJ body style because i found one that has a 5" lift and 33" tires for like 3500 and im tempted to buy it. any advice here? For off roading are the regular cherokee and the grand cherokee about the same level wise?

Ive been looking around and they are supposeldy called ZJ's right? why does jeep have to make this stuff so confusing for me :*(

I like old Buicks and there is alot of body styles like the A, B, C, D, etc, etc. Unlike Jeeps, bigger companies like GM will use one body style across multiple names. For example there are Buick, Chevy, Olds, and Caddy "B" body cars. So Jeep is pretty simple in comparison because you know and XJ is always a Cherokee and only a Cherokee. :-)

I have no idea about the trail ability of a Grand. For my tastes, simpler is better. There is too much to break on a grand cherokee. Like I said this is just my opinion.

aight i figured that the cherokee was more popular then the grand cherokee just by looking at like www.jeepforum.com there is like 3 times the amount of posts. Its just this grand is looking really beastly at this seller :eek:
