Alright so hears my story...
A few nights ago i was travelling down the highway at about 65 mph and i got off my exit. As soon as i got off my exit, i accelerated again, and my engine started to make a sound similar to the muffler falling off and the exhaust pipe rattling, so i thought that was it, since my muffler had fallen off weeks before. Pulled over, and the engine died. Had not overheated, just stalled. Started again, turned over, made a VERY loud noise as though the engine blew up, but i know it hadnt. Gave it alittle gas, and it became very loud and died again. It did this multiple times.
So i popped the hood. Since i specialize in suspension and braking, im not to good with engine work but i can get by. My car has a 4A-FE engine, 1.6L. No mods besides a lowered stance and a big brake kit, with custom drilled rotors. So i inspected the engine alittle bit, and after starting again, i heard a loud pop as i let on the throttle a little bit. Looked under the car and realized that something had broken. Now heres what i think happened. I think that since the car doesnt have a muffler, and i was going alittle faster than normal, the compression of the car was causing too much pressure and caused the manifold to break. But im not sure. Any ideas if this is possible?
Secondly, if i decide not to fix this engine, i want to swap the engine out for a better one, but im not sure what my options are. Can anyone tell me what types of engine i can put in a 1992 toyota corolla to replace the 4A-FE, money not being an option. Im probably going to buy a new car, but i dont have the heart to get rid of this one, so i think i might just garage it and but a few thousand dollars into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, and sorry for the long post.

a couple things you should look at. My 90 rolla had a problem stalling. after taking it to the shop a couple of times it ended up being a slight crack that you could barely see on the distributor cap. if it where that one cylinder might not be firing and the gas would build up until the fumes would come out of the cylinder and gas would build up in the exhaust system and then it could light up causing the loud explosion. I cant be sure of this because my car was the one with the stall and a friend of mines had the exploding exhaust but they both match up. remove your distibutor cap and check it VERY thouroly. cracks arent always obvious. good luck and good to see your heart in the car. about the engine swap it is possible to switch in the 4age engine. the f denotes fuel economy and more torque while the g means more performanc. the 4age produces about 135 HP and 110 TQ. It is a great engine and comes out of the GTS corollas. all the engine and transmission stuff bolts right up but depending on if it has VVTI the computer may need to be changed. if you want a new 4afe there pretty easy to find. i once walked through a junk yard and found 4-5 different kinds of vehicles with my engine in them. Good Luck.
