2001 GMC Jimmy Stalls

I have 2001 Jimmy and as of late been having it stall. Mainly when at a idle, but it has occured while driving. Changed a very nasty fuel filter and added fuel treatment and valve cleaner to this past tank of gas. Went good for about 2 days and today it stalled 3 times. Usually starts right back up, but on occasions it is very difficult to get going back. I have also noticed a low RPM (or at least I think it is low) at around 500 while in drive at idle and 550 in park. Could there still be junk in the gas tank and maybe another fuel filter is in order???

I have read other post on the vacum posibility but I have no idea where to even start with the lines or where to find them. :confused:

Give it a good tune up. Air filter, plugs, wires. Check and clean PVC, AGR. Look under the hood at all your hoses for cracking or broken connections.

Also clean your IAC valve. Idle Air control Valve.

It get gunked up with carbon and has to be cleaned with TB cleaner.

Clean and scrub the valve and the port it inserts into with a toothbrush and lots of cleaner to dissolve the crap.

Reset your computer and then strt it up. It will run rough for about 30secs to a minute and then smooth out.

Then with your foot on the brake, put it into drive so the truck computer can relearn the idle in gear for two minutes.

Hey you are describing i had with my 2001 jimmy, first of all do what BlazerLT said that will most likely fix the problem, other thing you could try is reset the computer, change the air filter and the fuel filter. The air filter is an easy change but the fuel filter you will most likely take a gas shower there is almost no way around this. just some ideas i had a similar problem and when all these were done (actually i was looking for another problem and replaced all those parts trying to fix it) the car runs great! good luck!

Also my jimmy is manual, and it only idles at about 600 rpm when hot, many GMs i have driven and had have had prety low idles, just a tought

Thanks to all of you who responded. Looks like what it has come down to was water in the gas. After haveing my wife spaze out over the SES light coming on, I was "forced" to take to a garage. The mechanic finds the MAF? (I think) unpluged. (oops! I must have forgot to plug it back in when I had took off some of the air intake when I cleaned out the IAC still didn't fix the problem) And after it still stalled, the mechanic put a gauge to measure the fuel pressure. Thank goodness the fuel pump was still good. Then he took a fuel sample and found small amounts of water bubbles. That and a ever so faint misfire on two of the cylenders. So his advice was run the gas as low as I dare, fill up with good gas (he strongly recomended a service station that he knows has good gas) and put in new plugs and wires. So far, a day later and the Jimmy has not stalled. So far so good. I would have never thought of the tune up route until I seen it posted in this thread and also from him. So much for the newer cars don't need tune ups until 100,000. Mine came at around 57,000.

And FYI, the #3 plug hell of a plug. After about an hour of trying to get that damn thing out, I finally thought of putting the sparkplug socket on it, then use a stubby 3/4 box end wrench on the end of the socket. Use a pry bar and wedge it between the wrench and manifold and use the leverage of the pry bar to break loose. Still really sucked!

The 100000 mile tuneup is bullshit in my mind.

I believe it has even gotten a little worse. I guess is back to the ol' drawingboard or to a garage. I am sick of fooling with it.

I would get the actual fuel pressure reading.

We need to know the actual exact number with the key to the ON position but not started so the fuel pump can prime the system.

I hate to bump an old thread, but, I am seeing more and more of "Jimmy stalls" threads. With mine, all I had was bad gas. I dropped the gas tank, removed the fuel pump, drained the tank, wiped inside with a clean shop rag, reinstalled pump and mounted the tank. Presto! My problem was solved. Thanks to everyone who jumped in this thread. Sorry it took so long to post the finishing reply.

My dad just had to replace the fuel pump for this exact reason. Idle stall, but fires right back up, a little sluggish. Cleaned the tank, changed the filter, which were both full of black crap, and put it back together. A few days later, gone. He had to replace the pump.
