Transmission Questions

Hi all,

I've been having some trouble finding the answers to a couple questions, and I thought maybe ya'll could help me w/ them.

-What are two reasons why the diamter of the mainshaft is larger for 3rd or 4th gear than the rest of the shaft?

-If the front seal is leaking and the tranny is installed on the vehicle, what P/T component can be affected and what symptom would it show?

-What damage may occur if the countershaft is driven out from the back of the housing?

-What are two possible reasons of a repetitive rear tranny oil seal leak?

-5 locations where the tranny fluid may leak out from?

- If second gear in the countershafdt is damaged, how can it be repaired?

-Two reasons why the thrust washers are used in the countershaft as opposed to having it press fit in the housing?

-Why are the synchronizers splined to the mainshaft and the spd fears are not?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi all,

I've been having some trouble finding the answers to a couple questions, and I thought maybe ya'll could help me w/ them.

First of all, I love you, but you gotta gotta gotta gotta gotta list car, year, engine, transmission, and other relevant info. I have no idea if you're driving a Camaro with a Th350 or a Packard with a three on the tree.

-5 locations where the tranny fluid may leak out from?

tranny pan gasket, front input seal, dipstick hole, (if automatic) rear output shaft seal, drain plug (if you have one).

My guess, though is you have a manual. Care to tell us what we're talking about?

curtis, i think he is just talking generally(for a autoclass?) not about a certain car. but we are talking about manual transmissions right?

-What are two reasons why the diamter of the mainshaft is larger for 3rd or 4th gear than the rest of the shaft?

i'm *guessing* you spend more time in those gears or put on more load then in others, needing more lube and cooling? or two make sure the gears are in the right order? some mainshafts are disassembled from both ends in, and the middle is thicker so parts can't slide over IIRC

If the front seal is leaking and the tranny is installed on the vehicle, what P/T component can be affected and what symptom would it show?

clutch soaked in oil, clutch sliping

-What are two possible reasons of a repetitive rear tranny oil seal leak?

excessive endplay in rear bearing for one, the other i would guess would be a problem with the driveshaft and/or driveline

-5 locations where the tranny fluid may leak out from?

front seal/rear seal/shifter housing

- If second gear in the countershafdt is damaged, how can it be repaired?

depends, on some cars you would need to replace the whole countershaft. if it is a small amount of damage, you may be able to file it down. etherway, replace drive/driven gears in pairs.

-Two reasons why the thrust washers are used in the countershaft as opposed to having it press fit in the housing?

IIRC to control endplay and to serve as a wear point

-Why are the synchronizers splined to the mainshaft and the spd fears are not?

research "floating gear" principal

Yeah, sorry, it's for a class. We're working on a Saginaw 3 spd manual tranny.

Thanks for all the help, dudes. :)

Damn. I was hoping for the Packard with the three on the tree.
