Removing engine without Transmission

Hey just want some info on this. Has anyone removed an engine from an integra or civic while leaving the transmission still in the car.
I have heard many mixed opinions on it. Anywhere from its easy if you drop it under the car with just the head and block. Also have heard it takes much longer than just removing the transmission.

I really dont want to have to remove the transmission due to the fact i have no air tools and dont want to waste time if i dont have to. I'm removing a B18C1 block and head from a 95 Integra and putting it in a 90 4d4g! What are your guys take on this. then im installing a Built B18b1/B18C5 hybrid engine into the integra later.

Just want to hear anyones input and I'd really like to hear from people that have actually removed the engine this way.

take it all out at once it will be so much easyer and u dont need powertools to take off the axel nuts

I've actually seen this issue at my friend's house. He was swapping a D15 with a d16z6 in a 5th gen. He always used to take the engine and the tranny out when doing swaps for people, but a master mechanic that he works with told him to just take the block out and leave the tranny in the car. So he listened to the advice and got the mounts and tranny unbolted from the block. There was no room to pull the block away from the tranny in the engine bay. So after all that time spent he had to bolt the block to the tranny again and pull it all out together. What should have been maybe a 2 hour job turned into 6 hours (6 hours because it was late at night in the AM and everyone was "under the influence"). Also in the confusion and frustration they forgot to put an axle in all the way so it flopped out.

But honestly it all depends on your luck pretty much. I mean the guy my friend works with removes the block and keeps the tranny in the engine bay all the time, so clearly it can be done fast. But if it doesn't work out and won't come out then you're going to spend a lot more time than you planned. Could go either way. Sorry I guess this really doesn't help at all, but I just thought I'd share.

I kept my tranny when i done my swap!
practicly just,
18,17,14,12,10 mm sockets!
a hydraulic jack,some jackstands & a cherry picker
& some strength!
took 6 hours!

hmmm still not sure what to do. Most likely im just going to pull the axles tommorow and take out the whole engine/tranny combo!

I swapped in my ZC without taking out the tranny. No problems what so ever, don't what all the "hoop-la" is about....

i tried w/o pulling the tranny and failed miserably.

II can now do it w/ pulling the trans in about 3 hrs start to finish. Need to work on my time though, one of the guys at work can do it in 90 minutes (watched him do a 99 Civic Si that fast, it was insane).

will that block even bolt up to your stock tranny?

woah, just noticed, a B-series wont bolt to your stock tranny, so that wont work anyway

lol thats why I asked, I was pretty sure it wouldnt.

I assumed he was getting a new tranny for his car, and leaving the old tranny for the guy who owns the other car (who's putting a new b-series in there).

on hondas and most japanese cars you pull the transmission out with the engine, dont you have some sort of book on car maitinence, it would show you a picture of it. if you try pulling just the engine you are going to waste 4 extra hours doing it. you better have a cherrypicker

we put a z6 plus tranny in gta's car just to find out the si tranny was no good. we tried yanking the tranny by it's self and then putting his old one. be sure to ask him what a b*tch that was.

i personally find it easier when both engine and tranny are yanked. it is 100 x's easier to mate the tranny to the block outside of the car

way easier to pull motor with tranny. axle bolts are tight but not that bad. and its way easier to put back together
