The front differential on my 86 k10 leaks oil from where the driveshaft comes into the differential. I think I bought the right seal but I am not sure how to put it in. I have never had to remove a driveshaft before and am not sure what needs to be done to remove it and replace the seal. Any help is appreciated.

if I remember correctly(I sold my chevy several years ago) to remove the drive shaft, there should be 8 bolts to remove. 4 of them will be holding the straps to the yoke on the front dif, and the other 4 hold the CV flange to the transfer case output. when you remove the bolts and starps from the front yoke, if you're going to reuse the u-joint, be carefull not to let the caps come off of the joint. once the shaft is out you'll have to remove the yoke from the pinion shaft of the front dif. once the yoke is off, just remove and replace the seal. also, it would be a good idea to pick up a manual (haynes are pretty good) it should have pics, as well as give propper specs for torque and preload needed when you put the yoke back on the pinion shaft.
also, please get more advice as it's been quite a wile sense I have worked on a chevy, I sold mine several years ago, and I'm sure that I've forgotten something.

thats how it is done. THe only tips i can offer are, when loosening the 8 bolts that hold the driveshaft in place, you will need another lever to counteract your loosening of the bolts. IE the shaft is going to spin so you need to get a bar in there and get the bar against something else or have someone hold the bar while you losen the bolt. After they are off, you will need to apply some force to the driveshaft cause the joints will be stuck good in place. Get a rubber hammer, or indirectly a metal one to hit at the ujoints, being careful not to hit places that will damage it in anyway. You will need to force it to come apart, but once it is loose the driveshaft retracts onto itself. You will need an abnormally large socket for the yoke. THink its 1 and 3/4 inches, but not positive. Then simply pry out the old seal and put in the new one.
