1991 firebird

I currently own a 1991 firebird 3.1L. Last spring it began to act like it wasn't getting any fuel. In fact it left me stranded probably at least 50 miles from home one day. So, I assume that could be fuel pump problems. How difficult is this to fix?

First thing you want to do is make sure that the pump is whats causing the problem. You can do this by first using a fuel pressure guage and make sure that there is no or low pressure next you want to check the fuses and relays for the pump and then turn the ignition to the run position without starting vehicles and listen for hissing sound coming from rear driverside of car. If you hear hissing that means the pump is getting activated. and just to give you a idea of what its like here our 2 sets of directions one is just for 4th Gens but 3rd Gens are very similiar and not easy as the fuel pump is mounted inside your gas tank and it will require droping the tank to replace the pump.

I don't remember hearing any hissing sounds coming from the tank. It has been sitting since last speing so i really need to get the battery charge up I guess. Thanks for the info and I will keep up with this web-site because I am sure I will have more questions because I am not that familiar with this kind of stuff. I am just doing this myself to save me some money. I have done some mechanical stuff before, but nothing serious like rebuilding a motor or anything.

If i remember correctly,dropping the tank was about a three hour tour.its easier to do if the tank is empty.It may take longer if you have never done it before.Be careful with the lines and fittings.If you change the pump,its recomended to replace the fuel pump relay,and fuel filter.a partially clogged fuel filter will over work a fuel pump,and murder it over a period of time.Good luck
