Stuck Rotor

Hello All:

I have a 98 Grand Prix GT and I am putting new pads and rotors on the front. I got the caliper and pads off no problem. However when I went to remove the rotor, I could not! Typically on other vehicles I have owned the rotor came off fairly easily after removing the caliper. A quick tap with a hammer is the worst I have ever had to do. Is it really rusted on that bad, or do I need to remove the nut in the center of the rotor (it looks like about a 35mm). I can not imagine that the nut must be removed but I have never done a brake job on this type of car before so I was wondering if this was something quirky with this platform.

Any suggestions?

you shouldnt have to remove the nut. If you have a rubber mallet then use that. Or try putting a piece of wood on the backside of the rotor than hit it with a hammer.

I worked on a '98 this past weekend........did an F-body brake upgrade. The rotor was tough harder to remove than expected. Most of the time they virtually fall off when you remove the caliper and bracket.

Both methods Rubberman mentioned would work well. I've seen extreme cases where a puller had to be used but I don't think you will have the same trouble.

BTW.......you don't have to remove the nut.
