Can't get alternator out

I am having trouble replacing my alternator. I removed it OK, but now cannot find a good path to remove it. What should I remove from the engine to make it fit through so I can put the replacement in?

If I remember correctly, I first had to remove the alternator and bracket from the block, then take the bracket off the alternator.
