98 monte and a mass airflow sensor code

My monte is getting a code for the mass airflow sensor. the repair shop took it out and cleaned and the cleared the code, drove it awhile and it looked like the problem was solved. After about 25 mins. of in town driving the check engine light came on again and the engine died. I was able to get it started and drove it back to teh dealer. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem. The mechanic does not think it is the sensor. I am wondering then if there could be a bare wire sending a bad signal. Any help and input would be helpful. Thanks

did you check the new code that tripped the light? If you have a re-usable K&N type air filter installed, the oil from that style filter wreaks havoc on MAF sensor elements.
