Hello all,
I just moved last month into a Condo, so I had to get creative with my available space to create a model building area. Since my girl wouldn't be too impressed with the unsightliness of an open bench, I decided to purchase a computer armoire so that at the end of a session, I just had to close the doors and I'm good to go. What do you guys think? I have attached a few pics.

Just to the left of the armoire is is patio door. All I have to do is slide my chair three feet, open the door and I have a ventilated spray booth right there along with my air tanks. It's perfect!!! I had a dedicated model room in my old place, but this is just temporary until I move into a bigger home. It's really not that cramped, everything is at arms reach and there is also a pullout that has all of my tools organized on it.
Can't wait to get back to building now, it's been about a year!!!

I got it at United Furniture in Victoria, British Columbia for $530.00 CDN. They are widely available all over North America though. The manufacturer is Sauder and the model number is 3676-290 from the Pacifica Collection!!!

Wow! Perfect! I want one! How much work did you do to modify it? Like all the little shelves for the paint?

There is nothing modified at all...the paint rack I built from slats of wood that I used in my old building room, it just happen to fit perfectly in the armoire. I just had to go out and buy some of those plastic drawers and I lined the main surfaces with vinyl/rubber matting to protect the surfaces. I just have to go out and pick up a piece of glass for my main building surface. The nice part is having that side table for instructions and photo references without getting in the way of the building area.

That's exactly what I want--height. Right now, I only have a flat desk and two drawers stacked together, so my work place is so limited.

Really looks like an elegant solution! :D
Do you use the slide-out keyboard shelf for anything?

I have my tools in an organizer on the slide-out, but I can easily use it for building too. I have to put some hours of work at this desk and fine tune where things will end up.

Nice little work station you got there. I like it a lot.
Hey Bil. Do you live in BC? I go up there quite often but can't find a good all around model store. I've been to Imperial (?) in Richmond. That's probably the best one I've visited. Have any suggestions for a modeler who likes imports/VIP/aftermarket wheels?

Yes, I live in Victoria actually. Imperial is good, so is Burnaby Hobbies and you have to go to Wilkinson's Automobilia. There is only one hobby shop in Victoria, but it's one of the best I have ever seen...outside of Japan that is!!!

That is a pretty good idea! I have an armoir sitting in the corner of my room & I am like, "what the fu*k am I going to do w/ this thing." Never thought of a model desk. I do most of my modellig in the garage. It has been converted into a room but I converted it back into a garage. Makes a very nice garage.(dust-free & insulated!!)

That's a great idea. For a cheaper alternative, you could get a simple double-door cabinet and a small folding table. Wouldn't be as slick, and you'd have to clear off the table before buttoning it all up, but it would be half the price.
I saw a tip in Scale Auto years ago, take a similar cabinet and use it as a paint station, with the 'booth' on the top shelf and everything related stored on the lower shelves.
