The Vette Servo is stock on Vettes, F-Bodies and on Impala SSs (I have a 96 SS). The Vette Servo is much better than the stock servo on the trucks. Some people will tell you that the billet servos are too hard on the tranny.
About a month ago, I noticed that my 90 GMC was not shifting right into 3rd and 4th. After talking to a few places, I ended up getting both billet servos and larger boost valves (more on this later). It now shifts much better than before, especially the 1 to 2 shift is very firm now.
After installing the parts, I did more research and probably would have done things a little different. First of all the billet servos are expensive (89 a piece) and the boost valves were only 10 or 15 each.
If I were to do it again, I would have used the Vette servo (around $18) and then put new seals in the overdrive servo (which was my problem - the seal was shot!). The boost valves will increase line pressure to extend the life of the 3/4 clutchs. There are 2 boost valves. One is the low/reverse boost valve and the other is the TV boost valve. I installed the .471 TV boost valve instead of the .500 since I did not want rock hard shifts. Both boost valves are replaced at the same time. You need to drop the pan, place the tranny in low and have a good pair of snap ring pliers to get the boost valves out! The servo is on the side of the tranny and does not require the pan to be off.
You can install all of these parts separately. The Transgo Shiftkit for the 700R4 includes the vette servo and the larger boost valves plus a new separator plate.
For my case, I just wanted to fix the shifting problems so that the 3/4 clutches did not wear out; therefore, I just replaced the servos and boost valves. I felt that I did not need a shiftkit since the truck is stock.
