Does anyone know exactly what an AE86 is and how to identify it from other corollas?

AHGGGG!!
Don't tell me you want to buy a 86 just because of initial d (your name)
J/K
Nah, I'm alright with it, just don't pretend you are takumi and crash down the side of a mountain.

I watched the first season of that show...very very cool. I really like the AE86. From what I see, the Corolla SR5 from 1984 is a pretty good likeness, if not the same car. Correct me if i'm wrong though...

ok, the US and Canada version of the AE86 has two main type
SR5 and GTS
The SR5 is basically a mix of the AE86 frame and engine block, but done to AE85 spec (I call my car AE85.5 =P) It uses the same 4A block(4AC engine, the JDM AE85 uses the 3AC engine), lacking the twin cam, EFI, different gears and final gear ratio, strut bar, etc.
The GTS is like the GT-Apex in the cartoon. Twin Cam 16 valve (4AG engine), about 130 hp

AE86 is the chassis name for the corolla trueno.
im not that curious about the levin but i heard from my uncle who has a real levin that the levin's chassis is the trueno's chassis but reversed or something liek that. probably wrong though.
other than that. the 86 is a very popular drifting machine. comes with 1600cc dohc 4ag motor, which makes 150hp at 7,600rpm.

From what I've read, AE86 is the generation of the car. Newer model Corolla's have higher number codes, such as AE111 (mid 90's Corolla's). The difference between a Trueno and a Levin is that the Trueno have retractable headlights, while the Levin does not.

I think that in the USDM corollas that the AE86 designation is from 1984-1987, its hard to find a good gts though, although u dont really need the exact tofu delivery car to drift. Just find a rwd car, get a good lsd, crappy tires, and a good suspension, and go to the parking lot!
Remember tho: never press the brakes whiel drifting, a good drift is done using the throttle, and sometimes the hand brake
u can even get a drift usign fwd, or awd, its jsut alot harder to do

nice video man. i wonder what the hell he was saying while driving :bloated:

the photo gallery at club4ag would be the easiest way too learn but if you're too lazy or can't veiw the large number of pictures this should help.
Ae COROLLAS
Ae71 circa 1980 came with 8valve 3a-c engine. this is a two-door coupe version of the square, 4door corolla sedan you may be familiar with. these are RWD and were not sold as a sprinter as far as I know.
Ae82 circa 1984 came with 8valve 4a-c or 16valve 4a-ge. this is a 4 door sedan, hatchback, or fastback. All Ae82 are Front wheel Drive and were also sold as sprinters. 2door hatchback Ae82 exist but were not sold as sprinters.
Ae85 circa 1984 came with 8valve 4a-c. this is the Base model for the Ae86. these are 2door coupe and fastback versions of the ae82 and feature REAR wheel drive. was also sold as a sprinter (pop-up headlights)
Ae86 circa 1984 came with 16valve 4a-ge. this is the sporty model Ae85. sold as the Corolla LEVIN or the sprinter TRUENO.
Ae92 circa 1987. 2 door hatches came with 16v 4a-ge. 4-door cars came with 16v 4a-ge. 2door coupes came with 16v 4a-gze(supercharged) or 20v 4ag and were sold as corolla LEVIN. this car was sold under sprinter name as Sprinter trueno (popup headlights)
Hope that helps.

The edit doesn't seem to work!
I made a typo, the Ae92 4doors came with 4a-fe not 4a-ge and I forgot to say that All Ae92 Ae101 and Ae111 are Front wheel drive. except for wagons which you can get in 4wd.
