Just a warning incase your water pump starts to go. The waterpump on my moms 97 Acheiva 2.4L is starting to leak. We bought a new pump for $50. One of the local repair shops that we always use said that it was going to be $250 labor to replace- because it was an "all-day" job. Engine has to be lifted, chain cover removed, etc. When we tried to find it when we opened the hood, it is "hidden" so well, you cannot even see where it is.

One good thing about the 2.3 vs. the 2.4, water pump replacement is much "easier". $250 sounds pretty good to me, I know when the pump went out on my Mom's 96 Grand am 2.4 it was near $600 including parts and took a few days.

I just spent over $600 on a water pump replacement on my 97 Achieva 2.4L. The problem, I think, is that there is a "weep hole" on the pump that most mechanics misinterpret as a leak. There's a collar that can be put on the pump to collect the "weeping" coolant and prevent it from being looked at as a leak. But my pump was leaking a lot worse, so that had to be replaced, and the collar was put on as part of the repair.

I just went through this last year on my wife's 97 achieva..."WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT"
2.4L SUCK....They are quick, and peppy, but to remove the water pump, you have to remove the exhuast, unbolt/remove the pass. side motor mounts (make sure you have an 18mm Wrench) jack up the motor, remove the dampner, and timming chain cover, just to get three bolts out for the water pump....Then after getting back together, it was making a ticking sound...Tore it all back appart, took the timming chain tensioner (sp?) to the dealership, got a new one, and still makes the same sound at idle...Under a load, or driving conditions, it goes away...
I CAN SEE WHY MECH. WANT'S SOOOO MUCH FOR LABOR!!!!
It's deffinatly NOT like the old cars, to replace...Did I mention, I HATE FRONT WHEEL DRIVES?
P.S. This car is now for sale if anyone is interested....2500.00 and it's yours...I have 6 cars, and don't need this one (Bought the wife a 99 windstar....) Email me, and can send pics [email protected]
