Hey all i orderd a k&n fipk for my 2000 silverado and was wondering if it made any difference removing the screen from the mass airflow sensor or not. I have seen some in this forums about removing it and was just curious if it makes that much of a differnece or not. The price that some places want for this kit is UNBELIEVABLE....... i got mine for $325 Canadian and that was the cheapest out of the 5-7 places i called. One place wanted 599.95

2000 Silverado 4.8
255/85/16 BFG MT'S
Dual 2 1/2" exhaust with flo pro mufflers
K&N Fipk on the way.

I've installed a K&N FIPK in my '01 with the 5.3 and at the same time took the screen out of the MAF sensor. I noticed better performance immediately. Nothing dramatic, but definitely noticable. Removing the screen is just a common sense thing. Any screen will restrict airflow to some extent. It's basically there to keep debris off of the sensor wires. If you keep your air filter in good shape, this becomes a non-issue. If you do this, just be careful and take your time. You don't want to damage those wires or you will be buying a new MAF sensor!

I removed mine, and saw no difference whatsoever. Had I not lost the screen, I'd put it back in.

It made a big difference. Why: It was very dirty.

My truck has 100,000 on it.

I think it is really used to help protect the little sensors on the MAF.

Fule Injection Performance Kit....
Yea, i got a sweet deal on mine off e-bay too. I think it came to like $185 with shipping and everything. I dident bother removing the MAF screen. Seemed like too much trouble for a little power gain.

i have never heard of too much trouble for a little power gain...... hell power is power

well when you only goin to "possibly" get about 1 or 2 hp, and you risking ruining your MAF and they arent very cheap to replace....thats a little too much trouble for me..

Hey all:

Just some infor for you folks, that "screen" you guys are talkin about is called a honeycomb, and it has nothin to do with protecting your MAF (even though if something gets in there it might hold it), thats what the filter up stream is for. The honey comb is a flow straightener. it makes sure that the air it exactly perpendicular to the MAF. So it get proper reading, because air at that section of the intake may have angular momentum or velocity to it and might flow past the MAF at an agle causeing an improper reading and therefore calibrating air fuel ratios and such improperly.

thats my 2 cents anyway.

I agree with Mechs02. I ripped my air intake system apart today to install my k&n fipk and had a chance to look at that screen, and in my opinion in no way is it a screen. A screen would be alot finer and not have the need for the thickness that it does have. I think that by having the thickness that it does, it could possibly straighten the airflow a bit. It took me a little over an hour to install the fipk (would have been less if the instructions were a litle better in my opinion) and the improvements that were noticed immediatly werewell worth the time and the money ($350) I noticed a ton more low end throttle response , no where near as much throttle needed to get up and going to the same speeds as before and when you put your foot into it , it has this roar to it that really sounds impressive. Considering the problems i had when i had the dual exhaust installed it is probably going to be about two weeks before i will see all the benifits from this system, but like i said earlier the immediate improvements were alone worth it never mind once the computer has been able to adjust everything to the greater amount of air it can now breath.

well i went the cheap route today and got myself the k and n filter from canadian tire was 79.99 reg on sale for 59.99 while i was installing i modified my air box too i cut the air silencer on the bottom of the tube in between the maf and the t.b off! all it's for is to silence the incomin air and slow it down so i cut it off then put urethane 1/4 in. thick tape around then put a spray paint can lid on top of the hole and hose clamped it down all i can say is wow what a difference in sound and throttle responce , for all you who dont have 350 for an intake tube just buy the filter and mod it! next iam going to cut the egr tube that's in the t.b to let air flow better ill keep you posted , i got these tip's from sshotrods.com

Thanks for the info, I think most of us in here knew that. Atleast, I was using the word screen generically. It is still a mesh in front of the sensor, despite its intended functionality it is still a "screen".

Ok, not to sound stupid.. But I just bought the K&N CAI (FIPK Gen2) for my 2000 Silverado 5.3. and installed.. When I test drove it.. Theres a loud noise when this things at any higher RPM.. Sounds like I got a Exhaust on this truck.. Thats normal I take it? >> IT sounds like when I had a 85' Chevy Fuel INjected 350.. WIth the Top Breather Cover flipped over.. Loud SUCKING air noise?

it's on the stock air tube instead of paying 3-5 bills for the fipk i just bought the filter and modified the air tube ,the silencer is the big black box on the bottom of the stock one i cut it off and put a cap on it with a hose clamp now it's just like a 4in tube from the throttle body to the maf, kind of like the fipk but without the cost! do me a favor cut your's off put a spray paint can lid over it or duck tape and re-install iam sure it's the same performace sshotrod.com say's it better(i meant word it better)

yep, this is normal. I was also surprised when I first heard it. I have the 4.8L and it makes a great sound, kind of like a whistle when I hit the gas.
