bypass the nss

Hey gang...I'm going to try bypassing the neutral safety switch on my 90 cherokee. I'm not a mechanical guy so I wondered if someone could tell me where the starter is and what two posts on it I need to connect with a screwdriver. email me at [email protected] thanks! -Brett

The ones you are looking for are usually the two largest ones. Another method you might try is to disconect the connector from the nss and hop it with a peice of wire to complete the circut that way. Best wishes, dont get shocked unless not tasting your food for a few days would be a good thing.

Ok...two things (remember I'm not very mechanically knowledgable as I work in politics) first, where is the starter in the 90 Cherokee and second, if I do the wire thing you're talking about should the wires just stay connected?

Why what, Saudade? Now...yours is the sort of mindless dumbass responses that ruin sites like this. I'm not even sure that "why" is an appropriate question to anything I wrote, but I'll try to give you an answer...I want to know if I can keep the wires hooked together and create some sort of ambient heat with which I can heat coffee or make toast while I run my daily errands. Dumbass...These guys have information on Jeeps that you can't get from the local garage...so, Saudade, you are a jackass. To everybody else: I could still use some help on the nss bypass.

FYI, Saudade happens to be one of the most knowledgable participants in the XJ forum, so your dumbass comment is totally unwarranted. Since your in politics, you are evidently used to this kind of response to a question.
If I may spell it out, he is wondering why you would risk damaging your vehicle by disconnecting the safety switch. Personally I wouldn't, make your damn toast at home and use the phone to run your errands. :thefinger

Ok asimplechaos8 since you work in politics you should know that you get more cooperation when you communicate nicely with those you want something from.

WHY is a fair question seeing as you admit you are not mechanically inclined and you are attempting to bypass a safety switch that is designed to prevent people and things from getting run over.

If you are having trouble with the nss then tell us and we will be glad to help with the problem before you go sticking screwdrivers in places where they don't belong - just ask nice.

JD- I thought it was obvious to jeep owners why one would want to bypass the nss on a cherokee since most people have had problems with it. The jeep will not start and the backup lights haven't worked for a while so I'm confident, based on other responses from other jeep forum folks, that that is at least one of my problems. I just want to know where the starter is.

Why don't you try to fix it, it's actually not that hard and as JDPascal said it's safer. It's there for a reason. Did my own recently it took about an hour and didn't have to raise the jeep. Same problem as yourself and its like new now.

Despite your boorish remarks, I'd agree with Diverman and suggest you simply fix it instead of bypassing it.

Next time, try (as JD suggests) explaining the problem first. You find you'll get answers more quickly without "mindless dumbass responses".
