Shifter Swapping

Howdy, I jsut got a new AT shifter for my max and was wondering about how i could remove the shroud that covers all the goodies. I have never remved it before and dont want to go in half blind and snap something. I was told that i cna splice the wires but i feel that its a bit messy. Thanks in advance:)
