Car and RPM's jerk on 97

I have a '97 4runner automatic with 112000 miles, while driving sometimes my RPM's will briefly (split second) jump UP and then fall back down to where they were sitting prior. The jump is only a few hundred RPM's and causes the car to jerk slightly. Should I start with the fuel filter/ fuel injection cleaning? ANY ADVICE?

If you are not getting a "Check Engine" light, have someone hook up a OBDII instrument and drive. keep track of the sensor outputs when the engine overspeeds. MAF sensor, TPS, etc may be causing this and you can see the difference in readings that occur just before the overspeed. The readings that change after the overspeed are in response to it and not causing it. Probably a bad sensor.

If the problem keeps up then it maybe the tranny solenoids. That is how mine 4runner started out. I finally took it to the dealer when I had to shift manually.
