running issues

i just bought a 88 gti for 700 bucks. the only problem i have is after it runs for a while then i shut it off and then try to drive it agian, it starts but i have to pump the accelerator pedal to gain speed to shift. Then after i get to 4th gear and come to a stop and downshift and take off again its fine?

did you check your tranny fluid?
not sure if that could cause it but, it might be worth it to change all your fluids. how many miles on it?

it is a 5 speed, and it has 168945
