87 formula 500 hood

Last year a friend of mine had a silver 87 formula 500 5.7. It had some hard miles on it and not in great shape. Soon after he wrecked it and it had fair damage in the rear and mostly front right corner. Sold it to some body for $500. I would probably have bought it, but no place to put it. But the one thing on the car that caught my attention was the hood. It had a digital tach and lights in the raised area in front of the driver. The only one I've seen. My question is: is this a limited edition, and if so, how rare, or was it just some option you could get?
