fuel mileage of the Lexus LS 400

As you can see, I have a BMW 535i. I am thinking about getting a 1990-1992 (up to 1994 if I get lucky) LS 400 to accompany the BMW. At first I was only committed to 1991+ Legend coupes, but I'm impressed with the LS 400's large size and alleged quietness, power, smoothness, reliability and blah-blah-blah--you get the idea.

My concern is that in my typical unfortunate city-type driving, my 3.4-liter 6-cylinder 535i averages about 17.3 mpg. EPA estimates for my car are 15/21 mpg. The V-8 LS 400 is supposed to get 18/22, and I believe it because the Lexus V-8 generally strikes me as a very efficient engine compared with the big BMW six.

What do you all tend to see regarding mileage? Also, I'd be delighted to hear your all's more general impressions of your cars (keep in mind I can't afford 1995+).

Thanks so much.

I have a '91, and with my higher than average aggresivity (I think I invented a new word!) driving style have recorded about 15-16 mpg around town, and around 26 on the highway cruising at 80 mph.

Thanks. That's very good. I just took my 535i on a 425-mile trip down to NC, probably averaging about 80 (90% of travel was between 75 and 90). Average mpg for the very HIGHWAY trip was only 21 mpg. I guess with the V-8 Lexus I should get decidedly BETTER mileage than with my 6-cylinder BMW.

I've read a bunch of other posts now that second what you said--highway mileage is around 26 mpg.
