2001 Tahoe front end Clunk

Have a 2001 tahoe. Front end started making a clight clunk noise when going over bumps. Clunk has progressively gotten worse and worse. Is this a comen problem with these cars? Any idea what it is?

I have a 2002 Tahoe and I've had this problem twice. The first time, I didn't even have the Tahoe a year when I took it in. I was told a bolt had come untightened. Warranty covered. I just took it in for the same thing. It's been a year from the last time. I just received a call that the drive shaft has to be replaced. My extended warranty does not cover this. I was told nothing bad happens if I don't replace it, but the noise will get worse. I'm taking it somewhere else for a second opinion.

It could be the infamous steering clunk. Does it make the sound when when you turn, more prevelant when you turn left. Are you feeling any vibration in the steering wheel when you go over the bumps.What happens is the steering wheel shaft joints get dry and the shaft needs to be removed and joints need to be lubricated. Tahoe has had this problem a few years and at $140.00, its a expensive lube job. Talk to your dealer and see if they have the new updated steering shaft. Sounds like your out of warranty, but talk to your GM service advisor and see if he/she can cut you a break on the new shaft. Your GM dealer is aware that this has been a ongoing problem and may be willing to work with you on the installation price, at least mine will.

Sounds like the steering shaft I have a 2000 Tahoe and had the shaft replaced early on. Recently had the shaft replaced again. I learned the shaft has been redesigned and GM knows about the problem must be why they replaced it for free even though the warranty has expired. Oh yeah they also told me the lube job will not fix the problem.
