I have decided that street racing is not a good choice. I talked to my mom about that I have decided to race at the track. She wont even let me do THAT. WTF. If I cant do it at the track, then she's just forcing me to street race. What should I tell her to convince her to let me race at a track, BTW, I'm 15 years old.

But it's what I like to do. Shouldnt she be supporting me at it. Shouldnt she motivate me to become a better racer and start running in competitions. I just think that just like parents motivate kids to play physical sports, they should also motivate them to do motorsports if that is what the kid likes. I hope that when I have a kid, he can be a jr. dragster champion.

15 year old kid + car + racingtrack = Disaster waiting to happen. How can you have a car at 15 anyway? at what age are you allowed to drive in the States? Wait till you have some experience, your mum probably dosnt want you to go out and kill yourself just yet.

In some states, the permit age is 15, and license (limited) is 16.

You can start driving with a birth certificate at age 15 and 1/2 in NH. I was licensed two months past 16.you should drive a solid two years before you try ANY kind of racing. You need to learn a respect for the road, and how your car reacts, and learn how your car responds at all speeds.

the best thing you can do is wait a little before going to the track before you race, get the feel of your car on a hard launch, the best is to go to maybe a warehouse and pratice in the parking lot or those nice straight roads....dont embarass yourself the first time when you goto the track because you dont know how to control the car properly, and if worst comes to worst just wait to goto the track....here in Jersey you have to be 18 to be able to race anyways...

AT 15 or even 16 what lind of experiance can you have? With a MILLION miles under my belt it makes me cringe seeing some of the young kids driving and the lack of common sence while driving. This endangers all of us on the roadways. Listen to mom get some experiance under your belt with regular driving cause at high speeds it can happen sooo quick and you can't do a damn thing about it. It would really suck for you to get hurt really hurt and have to rely on others to take care of you cause you wanna race.

Kid, you're 15...get some freakin' experience first. How the heck do you know you want to race. Obviously you've never raced yet 'caus you're too young. And no, what kind of sense are you using?
"Um...parents support kids in physical sports so they should support them in driving really fast in a car when some have never actually driven before...duh!!!"
I'm not going to say race anyhow when the time comes ignoring your parents, 'cause you don't have the sense to realize your mom does have some knowledge and you have the stupidity to start asking your mom this before you even have your license. Scare her enough and she won't let you get it at all.....

If I cant do it at the track, then she's just forcing me to street race.
Indeed she is. I can't wait 'till you try to fight impound and jail with that gem. "Officer, my mom wouldn't let me race on the track so I had to do it here and hit that telephone pole! You don't understand how unfair she was being - sheforced me!"
I understand how frustrating it can be for your parents to not be sympathetic to your plight. But you have to realize that she's got your best interest in mind. She doesn't want you to crash, and die, and take what I'm assuming to be her car with you. Yes, track racing is a more controlled environment than the street, but it's still wide open for disaster, and someone so fresh to driving needs some experience. Most tracks, as said before, won't even let you. What worries me, however, is that you've not responded. This leads me to think that you're not hearing the answer you want, and have left this thread and are going to go defy her anyway. Hope it all works out for you in the end, buddy.

Racing on a track (even drag racing) is WAY harder than you think it is. Have you ever driven a car in the snow? On black ice? Yeah, that's not easy. Driving a car at it's absolute limit in the dry is WAY harder than even that, and, if you don't know what you're doing (which you don't), more dangerous.

look man, i know exactly how you feel. when i told my mom i was going to start racing, she said no no no. you know why? because she was scared i was going to get hurt, and she still is. but shes come around, because she has realized how much i love cars, and that tuning cars is what i want to do for the rest of my life. i asume your talking about drag racing also, in that case theres not much that can go wrong unless you have no common sense. but even with drag racing, you should still get some driving experience. im not sure how much of a passion you have for tuning cars, but if you make your parents realize this they will eventually settle down about it. but as for right now, listen to her, and let her know how much you love cars, DO NOT mention racing until youve had your license for awhile and got some experience. just let them get a peace of mind. and then talk to them about it.

It was my mistake posting this, but my purpose was to get ideas of how to convince my mom that racing is what I like and I want to do it at a track as soon as I am able to, but she said never ever, so that is my problem. I never said that I was going to go out this instant and find a race.
I am applying for jobs at small shops to help change brakes or change oil, I'm going to get money to start saving up for a b18b, but no one employs me, they say to come back when I'm sixteen. One employer explained to me that until i'm 16, the state will pay for any of my injuries at work , so if I get hurt and I'm 15, they'll have to pay the bill. (I posted about the job because someone mentioned, racing finance)

Please dont try to race untill your old enough, im sixteen and i dont even think of racing my car down a public street, let alone at the track. I dont have enough driving knowlege for that. Its just too risky and too expensive. Ive seen too many friends either killed or injured because of street racing. Mom knows best, why you say? because shes probably done the exact same thing and realized how dangerous it was as she looks back on it.

Well I guess that I don't know where you are coming from because both my parents worked at the race track on the weekends for fun so they have always been supportive. When my mom got here '01 stratus R/T (with a 5 speed) she even let me race it. It was pretty quick. But as I was saying I raced karts and stuff well before I was 16. All my cars I have raced have been my own.
A few reasons not to race at a track:
1. If you have a warranty it will become void.
2. Your car insurance will become void, so if you fuck up it comes out of your pocket, also very expensive to get reinsured.
3. Most medical insurance won't cover any injuries.
4. Racing at a track isn't much safer, yes it's a controlled environment, but if just keeps you in a smaller area.
Most people that are serious about racing have experience and build on that everyday. They also have special insurance for the car and medical, which I might add is quite expensive.
I rest my case.

Ok kids its story time!
About a year or 2 ago, a 20 year old friend of mine was dating a 16 year old....yeah....but any way, the kid had a camaro and he was all like yeah i race and what not, so one night im driving home from a friends house and he pulls up beside me at a redlight and revs his engine, i shake my head but he keeps doing it. Light turns green and he goes flying off, after about 5 seconds his car wobbles and suddenly lurches off to the left and smacks into a tree. Luckily, although stupid, he was wearing a seatbelt and he only had to have a few stiches from glass shattering. All im trying to say is wait a little before you start racing. Get some normal driving time under your belt before you start driving fast, and get some driving fast time under your belt before you start launching hard, and after about 2 years you should be ready for the tracks, or if you really feel the need to be a dumbass you will be ready for the streets.

Yeah, I have, but if I tell my mom, she's going to say that racing with turns is going to be even more dangerous, but then again, I dont think she knows the environment in which auto x events are held in.

Just came up with something right now, doubt it'll work, but its funny anyway. Here it goes.
"Would you rather me driving 20 mins across town on the freeway in the rain next to a woman swerving through traffic talking on her cell phone in her lifted Ford Excursion?
OR
Driving in a straight line, in the dry, with an emergency crew on standby, from 0 to a bit above highway speeds* then back to 0, with a helmet, for less than 20 seconds?"
*this is assuming your car isn't actually fast :P

Sivic beat me to it as I was reading this thread. ASK your mother to go to and Auto X event, just to watch. That convinced my mother when I bought my first REAL car (87 944). If she will not go for it, suck it up. Right now it seems like an eternity, but a couple of years is not all that long to wait.
In the event that your mother does follow along with the Auto X idea, and it does work in your favor, do us all a favor, leave that style of driving on the track. Check out a book called "Secrets of Solo Racing." It covers a whole lot of the basic techniques you will need to be familiar with. More than that, when someone gives you advice, which you should listen too if his lap times are low, be polite and respectful to the others at the event. I know the events I go to don't need another kid in his Honda with more attitude than skill.
One parting thought.... Learn to drive your car, then modify it.

well you have to start sometime, Might as well be when you are 16 and don't have a car that will put you in a world of hurt in a hurry. You know you can get hurt getting out of your chair after dinner time. A track is a special prepped surface designed for high speeds. A track will also have trained professional EMT staff equiped with there own ambulance in the case something does happen. There is a small risk in racing. thats about it. It's not like you are going to start out in an 11 sec car.
Hell first car I ever took down the track was a 1995 escort. It was slow but it gave me a chance to get the feel for how a track works and the process of pre-staging and staging. Now I race an 11 hopefully soon to be 10 second (I hate winter  ) street machine. This is kind of like my parents in high school, they had no problem with me playing football but when it came to wrestling, they where afraid I would get hurt :screwy:

This is kind of like my parents in high school, they had no problem with me playing football but when it came to wrestling, they where afraid I would get hurt :screwy:

Coupled with the autocross, once you start working, start saving your $$ for a performance driving school. Let your mom know how much it is, and that when you're 18 you plan to go in order to learn how to control your car better. Then follow through on it.
She'll respect you more for planning ahead and will have a couple years to get used to the idea - as well as seeing that you have a real interest, rather than just begging to do it.
Part of what's going on is that you want to race, and that's cool - but do it smart, and safe. Another part is showing your mom that you're not just an irresponsible kid whining to get something, but are thinking things through before doing them. You've got to earn her trust and respect to get what you want.
As a cool bonus you'll get some track time on your 18th birthday.
